550 File or Directory Not Found

#1 Post by petergoode » 2008-04-27 17:56

I am new to the server software, and have made my best effort to solve my issue by looking at the FAQ, wiki, and forums...hope no one will shoot me for this inquiry.

Specifically, I am running 0.925 beta on a Windows XP Pro system. I am able to "sign in" to the server from other PC's on my home network, but get the 550 error message when I try to upload files.

In case anyone wonders if it might be a firewall issue (router or Zone Alarm), I would assume not, since disabling ZA did not solve the problem, and for years I have successfully port forwarded to my old Serv-U software via ports 20 and 21 on my linksys router. Plus, I doubt I could even sign in if I was being firewalled out.

I have not changed any of the settings on the server software as of yet...my user account directs me to a folder I call c:\acc, which has three subfolders which I can access as well from my ftp client...and I have permissions checked for all four categories in files and directories. I have tried uploading folders and single files, but keep getting the 550 message.

I am not sure how to follow the options in the FAQ about additional software configuration changes...if it is relevant, I am on high speed cable, and use XXX.dysdns.org as my external fixed server ip address.

So, as I am very much looking forward to making good use of the software, I will be greatly appreciative if someone can help a newbie here get this to work.

Thanks in advance!

If the c:\acc directory exists and appears with a 'H' in the user config of FZ Server and you have permissions set then you must check Windows permissions. By default FZ Server runs under SYSTEM.

Thanks for the suggestion!

However, I wonder if there is a clue to be had by the following...

My home network consists of an XP Pro tower running FileZilla server software...a desktop running XP Home, and a notebook running XP Home.

Both of the XP Home systems are runnng SmartFTP as the ftp client, 2.5 on the notebook, 3.0 on the desktop.

Although I get the 550 error when trying to upload from the XP Home PC running SmartFTP 3.0, I have no trouble uploading from the XP Home notebook running SmartFTP 2.5.

As best I can tell, the settings I have for the ftp account on the XP Pro tower are identical.

Once again, any ideas would be most appreciated! I am sure there is an explanation, possibly obvious, but as of now, not obvious to me.

Could you try SmartFTP 2.5 on the PC running 3.0?

Thanks for your further thoughts.

I thought the most "polite" thing to do, in fact, was to try installing the FileZilla client, rather than continue to fiddle with SmartFTP.

I evidently have some sort of conflict between my XP Home desktop, from which I tried running FileZilla client, and the networked XP Pro tower which is running the FileZilla server.

Here is the text of what I run into:

---------------------------------

Please note, this username and password had been successfully used by a friend from a remote PC, with success. And, FileZilla client on the XP Home desktop works successfully with outside ftp server sites.

Once again, if there is a tweak I am missing to make this work, I will be most appreciative of a suggestion.

Did you enter your external IP into FZServer's Passive settings (or chose the 'Retrieve' option)?

Though I am not a total newbie when it comes to these things (i.e. I wouldn't be playing around with ftp servers and clients in the first place), I am not sure how to interpret the instructions contained in the faq/wiki or your response.

If you can bear with me, let me clarify...I am on cable, with dynamic ip, using ***.dyndns.org as my external site to allow outsiders to find my site.

As such...can you please tell me what exactly I should be entering into the passive mode settings on the server, i.e. retrieve, or the dyndns.org addy, or filezilla?

Once again, thanks so much for helping me figure this out.

For dynamic IPs, use the 'Retrieve' option.

Is the server behind a router? If that's the case, you need to port-forward some ports in your router (50 will do). Example: 5100-5149. Then enter the very same port range into the 'Use custom port range' fields.

Amazing...your recommendation, which clarified the ftp wiki/faq instructions, worked like a gem!

Thanks ever so much for your help...seems sometimes one needs a faq to know how to interpret the faq!
