Re: editing and opening HTML files from the client

Thanks. Ok I finally got it to work, like so: Under Edit -> Settings -> File editing, I have the following: - Use custom editor, pointing to WordPad - Always use default editor (What I was trying to do, was to use the default system association for "Edit", but I have no idea if such a thing even exi...

editing and opening HTML files from the client

Right clicking on an .HTML file shows "Open" and "Edit". Yet they both do the same thing; they invoke the "Open" command that is default for the .HTML file. In my case, this opens it in Google Chrome. Sure I can set the default action in Explorer to open with WordPad, but then when I click on HTML s...

repeated login attempts from unknown IP

I was shocked to see someone continually (about once every 5 seconds) attempt to log into my server without being banned. It looks like the auto-ban settings are OFF by default. Wow. So, I went to turn it on and the auto-ban settings impose a minimal of 10 attempts in a single hour! Again......

Re: installation issues... service or not?

Right. I understand... the ability to read means the ability to change and potentially destroy if buggy. I must say I'm a little shocked that this behavior is actually common... :?

Re: installation issues... service or not?

This implies that regular FTP is encrypted. I thought it was all plain text. No, I wrote "encrypted FTP". This includes FTPS, FTPES, and SFTP*, but NOT FTP (also called plain FTP or basic FTP)! *Note that SFTP is not FTP at all, but for the sake of encryption, it is included. Ok I was confused, sin...

Re: installation issues... service or not?

My bro and I have created a helpful start-up tutorial follow-along to get people set up. We figured it'd be helpful for us and others in the future, due to the lack of documentation for FileZilla Server. We'll be posting it on Xona.com soon. Awesome, please post back here with a direct link when it...

Re: installation issues... service or not?

Simple, the router cannot read encrypted FTP. This implies that regular FTP is encrypted. I thought it was all plain text. A server of mine got hacked once since I used FTP instead of FTPS (FTP + SSL), and to my horror I discovered that the password was being sent over the 'net as plain text! :o Fu...

Re: installation issues... service or not?

Update: FTPS (FTP + SSL) works. So this is fine. I didn't want to use FTP anyway, since it's insecure and sends info over the net as plain text. So, I don't care that my router screws up FTP, as long as it handles FTPS fine. Thanks for all of your help guys, it was useful. :) My bro and I have crea...

Re: installation issues... service or not?

Update: I've set up FTP on my brother's PC using all the same settings, with no router, with Windows Firewall exception for FileZilla Server, and it works perfectly. This seems to indicate that it is definitely my router that is screwing up the information. If there is no firmware update, then I can...

Re: installation issues... service or not?

Thanks again... My router says there are no firmware updates, in its own Internet check. Perhaps I should check manually, but apparently there are multiple places to get such fireware (why is this so complicated?): Siemens and Bell, and I see that people are having problems with this. I have a Speed...

Re: installation issues... service or not?

I feared I may have done that. The double bracket shows only in ftptest.net, but not in the logs (at least not in the server interface window, since the log file itself is empty; it must not flush its cache right away, which is strange). Also note that the last two numbers differ in both cases, for ...

Re: installation issues... service or not?

Ok sure: I've replaced my IP address with xxx.xxx.xxx.xx and the username with xxx, but other than that, it's verbatim: Status: Resolving address of xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Status: Connecting to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Status: Connected, waiting for welcome message Reply: 220-FileZilla Server version 0.9.36 beta Re...

Re: installation issues... service or not?

Ok, so it somewhat works. You were right, I cannot test the connection from my own PC, even using the external IP. I wonder why? Anyway, my problem reported from ftptest.net: Error: Non-number segment in PASV reply Make sure the server is configured to allow passive mode connections. If the server i...

Re: installation issues... service or not?

Ok I see in the Server FAQ:
http://wiki.filezilla-project.org/FAQ
That I have to set the custom ports myself in the server settings, and it recommends 5000-5100. So I'll have to port forward these over as well.

Thanks for your help. I'll let you know when I get it working. ;)

Re: installation issues... service or not?

Thanks so much for the reply. So port forwarding and port mapping are the same thing. I thought it was strange that my modem has "port mapping"... so obviously it IS a router. Duh. I actually knew this but just wasn't thinking. My shortcut I made to connect to it is even named "router". Lol.
