limit access

#1 Post by mfagin » 2009-06-29 14:38

I want to give access to someone else to upload files from just one of my directories. However, I do not want them to have access to other directories or files . Is there a way to restrict use to just one of directories

Create an account with access to just that directory.

Could you possibly be more specific about how to create such an account? I've used Filezilla for some time for full access by myself to several sites, but cannot seem to get it right to establish a limited access for another user --

In Site Manager, I've created a new site, then selected Logon Type: Account (instead of Normal).

I then named the account "Mark" (my user's name). That doesn't seem to mean anything, though. In testing, I can still get to all files/folders. I also tried setting up the default remote directory, but that didn't seem to change anything, either.

Thanks!
Susan

This must be done on the server, not on the client. If you cannot change account settings of the server, then what you want to do is not possible.

So do you own the FTP server in question (or have admin control over it)?

It's a shared hosting account, so I do not own it, but do control my portion of it.

All I'm trying to do is to allow one user to upload files, preferably to a folder on the site where he can't get into any trouble. :) Is this something we cannot do using Filezilla?

Thanks, and sorry if this is a dumb question,
Susan

Setting access restrictions for user accounts is something only the server administrator can do. Sorry.

If your host provider gave you access to a control panel of sometime look at it. That would be the place where you could create ftp accounts(assuming your host provider allows that).

Thanks! I did go there after boco's reply and, silly me, I had apparently already done that last year -- just had never used it. Works like a charm!

Thanks to all; it's refreshing for a new member on a forum like this to get such helpful responses (and fast, too!). Greatly appreciated!!!

Susan
