FileZilla under 64-bit Windows 7

#1 Post by hedera » 2009-10-24 00:30

I'm planning to upgrade my 32-bit Vista Home Premium laptop to 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate. I'm not really expecting to have trouble with FileZilla but I'm just checking. Should I expect the latest builds to run on 64 bit Win7?

Of course, unless MS did something bad. Note that Win7 is hitting FileZilla just now on a large scale. There are no long-term experiences yet. At least the client should work out of the box.

Twice in a row today I logged in to an FTP server and started downloading a file with the latest version of Filezilla, and both times within 4 seconds of the download starting my computer completely froze. My computer has never frozen at any other time. I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit.

There's something wrong with your system. Either your operating system got corrupted or your hardware is faulty.

Normal programs cannot freeze a modern operating systems. Such behavior would be against the very design principles of operating systems.

I'm having the same problem. Every time I try downloading anything with filezilla... my system freezes completely. Windows 7 64 bit, brand new hard drive, new graphics card, all hardware checked and tested and running properly. Normal programs may not be able to freeze a modern operating system, but... this one seems to be doing that.

Okay, I've spent the past hour trying to run FileZilla in every possible compatibility mode, and then uninstalling it and reinstalling it using compatibility mode, and no dice - *every single time* I start downloading files via FTP it freezes the entire system. I've watched it do this just over a dozen times in the past hour.

So... this sucks. I've used filezilla as my main FTP program for several years but will have to ditch it for now, until such time as it becomes compatible with Windows 7 64bit.

And... Windows 7's compatibility mode seems to be sort of a joke.

FileZilla is fully compatible with Windows 7. Using it on Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit without issues.

Maybe you should check out your antivirus solution or so called 'security' solution. Very often they are responsible for freezes.

Ah, yes, the compatibility mode. I think this feature got the wrong name. All it does is changing the environment the OS reports to the app, so the app 'thinks' it is running on an older OS. Compatibility mode does not magically make the app compatible.

But to all you folks running Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate: If you really can't find out what's the problem, you can use the XP mode (present from MS). Though, unfortunately currently the extra drives don't show up in FileZilla...

Most likely faulty hardware or broken drivers. Hardly the fault of FileZilla, it's impossible for an ordinary program to freeze a modern operating system.

Every other program on my system's working fine. None of them freeze the system.

Every time I try to download anything with filezilla... I get a total system freeze within five seconds.

All hardware is working fine - all drivers are up to date.

Does filezilla access some obscure drivers that no other program does?

Nope. An ordinary application can not freeze a modern Windows OS (anything NT based, Win9x is another story) unless there's something wrong with your installation.

Once I had the same problem: FTP froze my system. In the end, it was the NIC and it's drivers. Replaced the thing and no more problems.

How did you find out it was your NIC card?

Trial and error. But, to be honest, if FTP (a network protocol with strong throughput) freezes the system, checking the NIC is pretty close. Exactly as I would check the graphics card on a video error.

My Atheros NIC needed new drivers. I was able to recreate the problem until I installed the new driver, so I know that fixed it.

I'm about to try this, and I hope it works. Upgrading from x32 Vista to x64 Windows 7 today.

Please release a x64 version of Filezilla as soon as possible. I know you say the 32 bit works (even though many users say it does not), but why not push out a 64 bit release? It's what everybody will be using soon!
