#1 Post by michelle77 » 2010-07-30 14:47

Needless to say, I didn't change anything to my settings. Does anybody know what's going on?

Things don't break on their own, something must have changed. The question being if it's on their end or on yours. Can you connect to and transfer from/to other servers fine?

The problem may be with the server. Which is not FZ BTW.

I totally agree, something must have changed somewhere, I am just trying to figure out where (and how to fix it...)

I only use one server, so unfortunately I can't test it out on a different server.

I've noticed when I upload a file, on the remote site it creates up to 3 times a file called something like .pureftpd-upload.4c54053e.15.7371.3693f11a and deletes the original page I'm trying to replace. However, if I wait a few minutes and browse to the page in my Internet browser I can view the new page just fine. Even though in Filezilla it comes up as a "Failed Transfer". This doesn't work every time though, it appears to be randomnly.

Any thoughts on what it could be?

The .pureftpd files are part of a feature of PureFTPd. It is normally meant for larger files - while a large upload is underway the old file is still accessible, just if the upload is completed the old file is replaced by the new one. This shall guarantee as little downtime as possible. Without the feature, the old file is deleted at the begin of the transfer, and comes up unavailable or incomplete until the transfer is complete.

The downside for this (in some cases really useful) feature is that it breaks Resume on upload, you can't append to files after reconnect because of the random names.

Thanks for the explanation, I get it.

Based on the above log, is there any clue in there as to what it might be? This is not at all my area of expertise and I really don't know where to start looking.

The first thing I would try is disabling a firewall, for test purposes only.

I disabled the Firewall and turned off the AVG Resident Shield, but that made no difference.

421 Too many connections (4) from this IP - what could that mean? I only have Filezilla in one window and with one connection as far as I know.

Nope. You have one browsing connection plus one connection per transfer running. 3 connections with the default settings. However, some firewalls don't close connections properly, leaving them in limbo until they timeout. So you get over the limit very quick.

Do you have active transfers? For each active transfer, a connection is used.

Is there a way to change the setting so the connections do close properly? Or a way to extend the number of allowed connections?

I have the settings set to passive mode, the default setting. Is that what you mean?

It appears to go wrong here:

Code: Select all

Response:	150 Accepted data connection
Error:	Connection timed out
It then retries 3 times, and then after a few minutes it adds the following error:

Code: Select all

Error:	Disconnected from server: ECONNABORTED - Connection aborted

And now I am also getting:

Code: Select all

Error:	Could not read from socket: ECONNRESET - Connection reset by peer
Error:	Could not connect to server

All the error messages point to a misbehaving firewall.

Most likely silently dropping connections without informing the peers. Thus the server thinks the connections are still open.

"What" is silently dropping cxns? FileZilla? the firewall?

I've also had this problem for the last year or so, FileZilla was fine before that. Looking round for something more reliable. Right now I've got "00:00:00 elapsed" in Queued Files on a few files, & they just sit there like that with the log below. No transfer, no error msgs, nothing.
