Server to Server file transfer

#1 Post by kari » 2011-11-15 04:51

Hi,

I was wondering if it was possible to use filezilla as a website to website file copier? Is this possible? I have backups on my website and I currently download them to my computer but they take sometimes more than six hours to download. I was wondering if it would be possible to copy them across like the program x-copy/xtree gold :) but for the web. Or does it do that already :)

Thanks.
Defiantly a 1D10T error.

FileZilla does not support server-to-server transfers.

Why dont you just use a direct connection and back them up on your second server?

I have the same issue. I wish I could just point to a folder on the server, right click it and drag it, let go of the mouse, get a context menu and choose copy here - like I can in windows explorer. I would really like to backup a site on the server before publishing the new changes I've made to the site.

Unfortunately FTP doesn't support copying on the same server at all.

Hmm... In dreamweaver I can drag a folder from one place to another on the server tree. I can also do a copy and paste, but it seems like it downloads to a temp folder on my local computer then sends it back over when I do that.

Exactly. There's simply no feature in the FTP protocol allowing this. You correctly observed that your HTML editor does this with a workaround for your website. But wouldn't you save one step by simply uploading the local copy two times?
There's also the difference between DW and FileZilla: While the first one is a website maintaining tool, the latter is not. FileZilla is an FTP generic file transfer tool, used for very large files, thus such a feature isn't in it.

Hi,

You can configure IIS to allow server-to-server FTP transfers by changing the EnableDataConnTo3rdIP and EnablePasvConnFrom3rdIP keys in the system registry. By default, the EnablePasvConnFrom3rdIP registry key is disabled to prevent malicious attacks against the FTP service.
Thanks
