FileZilla Pro? Have I been duped?

#1 Post by foxracinginc » 2017-06-03 08:50

I have been using FileZilla for years, but never donated or gave back in any other way, so when I was offered a Pro version for a reasonable price upon downloading FileZilla today I immediately purchased it. I was forwarded to a site called upclick.com which kinda sounded fishy to me, but I went through with the PayPal payment anyway since I was forwarded here from filezilla-project.org ... After payment was completed I was given a download link, also on upclick.com as opposed to filezilla-project.org. I downloaded the file but hesitated to run it since I couldn't find any mention of a Pro version of the client on the official FileZilla website other than the popup you get when trying to download the client.
Now, I'd love to know if this is for real or if I fell for some kind of scam.

/edit:
nvm, I got the email for the Pro support forums which is on filezilla-project.org so it's probably safe to assume this is for real. Sorry, I just wanted to make sure, you never know these days...

Tim, is FZ Pro a new thing?

When I go to d/l and select Pro it takes me here https://cm1.upclick.com/join.aspx?ref=f ... &mkey1=new

I can't seem to find any information about what is different with the free version vs the Pro version, can you provide one?

Is the Pro version guaranteed to be free of any third-party programs? I've tried many programs but none of them have all the features of FZ so I'm happy to pay.

I've been using the free version for a long time and only really had one problem with malware, but it was super nasty...since then, I've been careful to d/l directly from the repository http://download.filezilla-project.org/client/ and choose one that doesn't go to any other site first, but just downloads, and then from that point on, the updated never have any extra stuff in them.

Also, on that purchase page there is a link to the pro support forum https://customerforum.filezilla-project.org/ but it doesn't appear to have any content - is that content hidden until after you have purchased?

Thanks

It lists the difference on the selection dialog. The main difference is the addition of Amazon S3 support in the Pro version.

You can safely use the bundled installer of free version, nothing is installed without your consent and all offered third-party software is guaranteed to be easily and cleanly uninstallable.

Yup, saw that, but besides the pro support, I wasn't sure there was any other differences

Nice. You need to add more information to your home page about this product, there's more than one thread on here about it, including an older one that says "anyone trying to sell you a paid version of this software is a scammer".

$10 is totally worth it for this software, I've tried several other versions that are $25-$40 for the paid versions but they just aren't the same man, not the same. Little things make the difference.

I know what you're saying but I've gotten burned by a bad download from SF. They have "download now" links all over the place that are actually not download links, but rather are fake ads that take you to other sites that make it look like you are downloading the same thing, but instead it's packed choc full of malware. Honestly I think that's where 99% of the complaints come from, because I've also just waited for the download to start happening and that does have all the bundled stuff in it, and you can opt out, but I'd just rather not worry about that at all, and that's worth $10.

One additional question, I found a wiki page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FileZilla that mentions a "fork" called Filezilla Secure that started 11/2016 and that encrypted storage of passwords was added to the main version in last month (5/2017) but I haven't seen that mentioned anywhere (maybe it's in the change logs and I haven't looked hard enough). So is that in the free and pro version now?

Encrypted password storage and Master password is in the Free version, too.

Okay, I can't believe I'm this dumb. I don't see any links or any information to FileZilla Pro. Where is this and how do you get it?

It's super secret.

Go here: https://filezilla-project.org/

Click "download" then click "select" under the "Filezilla Pro" column

It is apparently only reserved for some elite class of user...I kinda figured it would literally be plastered all over the internet, I mean, $10 for ad-free best FTP software? Shut up and take my money

Don't click the "download" link on the left. Just the quick download link on the main page
