[Question] SFTP multi user access Restrictions

#1 Post by Hidde_G » 2017-12-07 07:44

Hi FileZilla Community,

I have some questions concerning SFTP and user access restrictions that yet remain unanswered. Maybe you guys can help me to get a definitive answer:

- Is it possible to have multiple users with different access restrictions while using SFTP?
- If it is possible, how can this be implemented?
- Does FileZilla support different access restrictions across users in SFTP?

Context:
Currently we’re using FileZila’s FTPS for file transfer between us and our customers. We are using a virtual server to store our FTPS files. As we are communicating with multiple customers we have restricted access to some of the FTPS accounts, e.g. clients can only access their designated folders.

Now we are looking for methods to make the exchange more secure and SFTP might be a suitable alternative. However, I do find contradictory information on the web on the possibilities of using restricted access to user accounts: some articles say it is possible, some say it is not. Moreover, I cannot find any definitive answer from SFTP suppliers.

I hope you can answer those three questions and help me in my search for a suitable file transfer solution.

Hidde

It's a server-side thing, completely independent of the used client.
