Junkware with FileZilla

#1 Post by mutapa » 2019-09-11 16:28

I have used FileZilla for many many years but unfortunately I have to say I am very disappointed with my latest installation because of the Junkware that came with it. I installed FileZilla_3.44.2_win64_sponsored-setup. I knew it was sponsored but I thought that meant it would just have display ads in the app. Unfortunately, it installed some applications without giving me the option of opting out of the installations. Whats even worse is that one, or more, of those applications made some changes to my system without asking for permission or warning me. Home page of all my browsers were changed, other options like restoring previous tabs were changed!! That is just not OK!! At this point, I do not know what else was changed on my computer. That is just wrong. If long trusted open source projects like FileZilla can't be trusted that is not good!

All offers can be declined, nothing is forced upon you.

We also publish installers without offers, this is even mentioned at the start of the offer-enabled installer.

There is even a Pro version with additional features which you can buy to support the project. The Pro version does not include any ads nor offers.

If someone chooses one of the installers without offers, what happens on the next update? Will it continue to update as such? My question would be for using the update link, otherwise if that gives the 'extras', someone would just go the other download page? Just looking for a confirmation, thanks.

If you refer to the automatic update from within the program, that process never uses the offer-based package, always the offer-free ones, regardless of the installer you used for the initial install.

Why? Well, the automatic update is non-interactive, no way to confirm or decline offers. Thus, there aren't any.

The update dialog shows a static ad for the Pro version. If you don't want Pro, simply ignore it.
