Software feels like it's from 1992

#1 Post by Gerbmek » 2022-12-30 21:31

Is there anyone in the FileZilla team interested in improving the product?

There a lot of annoying aspects to it.

10 or 15 improvements would be enough to bring this software into the 21 century.
Sorry for being mean.

How and where to submit suggestions?

What makes it feel like it's from 1992?

Tim,

I think a better question is "What can be improved".
If you're interested, I will gladly make a list.

Software was much better in 1992. It was driven by enthusiasts and visionaries, not by marketing departments of greedy companies out for the quick buck like it is today. My 0.02€.

Sure.
But that's still alive in open source.

I'm more than happy to help improve this software.

There are a couple of important considerations for UI improvements:
  • Impact on the muscle memory of existing users (never ever underestimate this one)
  • Constraints established by established capability, e.g. a client able to display millions of files shouldn't change to a UI only limited to a few items (looking at you, mobile sheeple with your greasy sausage fingers)
  • Technical feasibility of the changes (cross-platform brings along its own unique challenges)
  • The manpower to actually implement it (volunteers for hard and tedious work?)
