Could the server be offline?

Well now, you haven't figured that I don't have the slightest idea of what I'm doing yet???? Not being snarky, just LAFFING at MYSELF. Ok well here I am now starting to understand, I have the server up and running, and the CLIENT is trying to now connect but it's failing to retrieve the directory listing, and yes I did put a couple of the folders I want to store in the shares.

Before I go, here's stupid for ya! Should I be using a different computer with the client to access what I've shared from this computer? When I was using the ftp.windstream client it was to do a web page and I just drug stuff from my computer to the remote site. Oh well I don't have any idea what the heck I'm doin'!

WIGGLE omgawsh! I learned to copy the url and open it in IE earlier this week, so for grins and giggles I copied the url from the blank folder in my remote site and opened it in my browser and lo and behold there's my files I shared with the server. Yep, I'm gettin' somewhere now!

Off to dance with the goats and celebrate!

I have read lots of threads about this topic, but haven't found one that seems to fit my problem. FileZilla was working fine for months, but the other day when I updated Ubuntu on my server I started getting the ECONNREFUSED message. I don't have any firewalls or virus protection software turned on. I went to the wiki and all the troubleshooting in that was about firewalls and routers.

This is the message I get when I try to connect:
Status: Resolving address of swapmypix.com
Status: Connecting to 71.255.124.61:21...
Status: Connection attempt failed with "ECONNREFUSED - Connection refused by server".
Error: Could not connect to server
Status: Waiting to retry...
Status: Resolving address of swapmypix.com
Status: Connecting to 71.255.124.61:21...
Status: Connection attempt failed with "ECONNREFUSED - Connection refused by server".
Error: Could not connect to server

This is the message I get from the network configuration wizard:
Connecting to probe.filezilla-project.org
Response: 220 FZ router and firewall tester ready
USER FileZilla
Response: 331 Give any password.
PASS 3.3.1
Response: 230 logged on.

Response: 200 Using port 54057, data token 1375001610
PORT 24,91,44,38,211,41

My internet connection is fine, everything else works, and I can still access my server with a VNC remote desktop. What do I do now?

I just tried connecting to a different server through FileZilla and I was able to connect. In this case, the problem seems to be coming from my server. The website running off the server still works and I can access it remotely, so it is online. Is there a setting somewhere on there I need to change to allow the FTP to connect?

Getting this when trying to update from 3.3.0 to 3.3.1 from within the application. All normal FTP/SFTP operation is working fine, just your update server. Never happened before, and I have no software firewall or AV that could cause this. I tried accessing the URL through a browser, which works fine. Widows Firewall is not enabled.

Code: Select all

Please check if the FTP or SFTP server is actually running and the Ubuntu firewall hasn't reactivated itself after the update.

Odd. Working beautifully for me, just updated to 3.3.2RC1. Please try again, maybe it was just a fluke.

I'm a big fan of Filezilla, absolutely love it, and I mean no disrespect but it's obvious that the changes made in the recent upgrade is what's causing the problem, "ECONNREFUSED".
It would be nice if instead of replying in a condescending manner almost putting the blame on the "incompetent users of Filezilla" you would just come out and explain what changes were made, to cause this problem.

Yes I do appreciate that filezilla is a free ftp client, and in my opinion the best around, but if your going to give, please do it un-begrudgingly.
peace out!

You know, we get that discussion on every update of FileZilla. Users complaining, when in fact their stupid firewalls simply locked them out because the FileZilla executable changed. With firewalls, you trade (some) security for convenience. Secure and convenient doesn't exist, it's a trade-off.
It would be nice if instead of replying in a condescending manner almost putting the blame on the "incompetent users of Filezilla" you would just come out and explain what changes were made, to cause this problem.
Version changes are here: http://filezilla-project.org/versions.php (also on the front page), and very detailed here: http://filezilla-project.org/changelog.php. Both reachable directly from the front page. Additionally, upon autoupdate, the version history is also shown. And, as I posted above, even a recompile with no changes at all would trigger that "problem": A new executable with a different checksum, and firewalls go into block mode.

Security is never a "Set and forget" thing. System security needs ongoing maintenance. You can't just install firewall and antivirus on Gramps' PC and that's it. You need to take care of it, every day. The internet is an evil place now. If you don't take care, you get pwned. No software can save you from that.

No I'm afraid i will have to turn off my windows firewall, whenever i use Filezilla, I tried all the suggestions and some but nothing worked.
If and when someone finds the answer to this problem, short of changing firewalls, please let me know, until then enjoy every minute!
