Cannot edit in Notepad or Word

I am brand new to editing HTML documents and was able to bring up the document I need to edit in NotePad and Word but when I went to type the new information the keyboard was not responding. I am sure it is an easy fix - but if you can help I would really appreciate it. Thank You!

Maybe the file is write protected? Also make sure it's really Notepad and not a browser window/preview.
