sitemap placement

I have copied and pasted the generated code for my sitemap into my index, welcome, menu and content page and I still get a 404 error. Where should I be pasting this code?

Paste it @ www.example.com/sitemap.xml also check your htaccess file to make sure it is not blocking it.

i want to place site map for my website http://example.com through filezille, I use rvsite builder for my website, so please tell me where do I upload the sitemap.xml and robot.txt file in the root directory.

if I use wordpress, I just use a plugin related, but like this, I think that's true opinion
