1st server: Dump database, backup site files to your PC.
2nd server: Upload site files, then restore database from the dump.

For exact guidelines, you need to post to a board that has specialized in that kind of things.

Most common thing to go wrong are the config settings, make sure you got the right database connection settings and you use the correct database :)... After you get this right you can just copy the files to the new host :) probably first copy the files to your pc and then to your new host :)

WordPress is wheel class CMS but it really fall short in the department of moving between servers. It took me a long time to do it with one of my sites, and is good incentive to never move hosts again. My advice to you is backup everything and do not delete the original account files until you are sure your new copy is working perfectly. The tricky part is for some testing you will need to change domain DNS, but if there are any problems you can always change back

If you're changing hosting companies, many will automatically transfer all the data for you (files, database, ssl, etc).

Upload your local backup copy to the new server - you do have a local backup copy, don't you, just in case there is a problem with the server  ?

Actually, you don't have to do any of this. Wordpress has the ability to "download" the entire content into an xml file. Then just go to your server, compress "wp-content" folder, and re-install wordpress on your new server.
Then simply uncompress wp-content, and click "import" to import all data from the ".xml" file on admin control panel.

If you are changing the directory name or location in comparison to basedir , use .htaccess and assign a "root url".

Cheers mate

Would the method you described include the htaccess file? ie the wordpress feature. I know that its needed for redirects to www etc. My experience with reinstalls is there is always something you miss and it screws with the new installation.

Does a Worpress reinstall not simply overwrite everything?
