Deleted thumbnails reappear after upload

I have a simple gallery site of paintings with a menu of thumbnails window on the left linked to a display window on the right. This has been up and running for years. Recently I deleted a few paintings and deleted the thumbnails in the menu after first unlinking them. I checked how it all looked and worked on my computer before uploading to the server using Filezilla. When I looked at Filezilla's list of files, the deleted thumbnails are indeed gone.

But once uploaded to the internet, I find that the menu still has blank thumbnails where the deleted thumbnails used to be. I have deleted all cached images, tried several browsers and I can't get rid of those "ghosts" of the deleted thumbnails. I cannot get rid of the blank thumbnail spaces online even though they are gone when I view on my computer. I'm hoping someone can guess what I'm doing wrong.
