Hitchhiker in installer

#1 Post by jstillings1 » 2018-08-07 01:42

Guys I installed File zilla free today and I stopped your first hitchhiker but missed the second and it is not removable from apps or programs. I do not understand your need to bundle hitchhikers...

I now have to do a restore on my windows 10 machine... annoyed.

I can clearly see an uninstall button in that screenshot.

Clearly you do. I sure wish it worked... And a response like this from a site admin makes me believe you are a fully aware of the hitchhikers and that I should do more to publicly out you for it.

Let's separate the two concerns:

1) About the uninstallation: What happens if you click the Uninstall button?

2) The fact that the installer displays third-party offers is well advertised and you agreed to it at the start of the installer. The installer also mentioned an alternative for users who do not wish to use offer-enabled installers.

1:) 37 infected files. The uninstall button does nothing at all for this "software." Malwarebytes was able to quarantine them and then delete, but I still had to go set all my home pages back the way they were. /still annoyed.
2:) The installer also states we can use the uninstall button if we do not like one of the hitchhikers.

Go ahead and install it. uncheck I agree on the mcafee and then hit next with the second one still checked.

As I stated, I missed unchecking the second I agree, so yeah your right... it's all my fault that your bundling hitchhikers with no uninstaller.

I haven't been able to reproduce this. Are you using any software that could be interfering with the uninstallation process?

Usually the same program detecting the PUP, is holding it in lock so you cannot get rid of it.

Normally I would totally agree with ya about the removal tool being the source, but I actually installed the malware bytes almost 2 days after the file zilla nasty. I had just got done clean installing windows 10 pro and I had not actually set up a new back up point yet, sooo I figured I would give MB a try instead of loose hours of my life clean installing again.
The file I used was https://download.filezilla-project.org/ ... undled.exe which seemed to be the big button on the home page. Not sure if path rotates?
Install, uncheck the mcaffee, leave the other one checked. Open a browser.. welcome to the highjack.

The ads do indeed rotate at what Hacker noon calls the ideal trouble-shooting-insanity-inducing frequency. After 4 hours of installing and uninstalling filezilla, I go tired, so i installed wireshark. Wire shark revealed a 2 known contact servers that serve malware. You do not want to be a part of Ironcore's ad bundling. The malware sites listed those ip's as having a 1 in 67 hit for a Modded Hash. I added a little video of my findings to my site for people who are curious what 4 hours of installing and uninstalling file zilla looks like to catch the randomization ads.
