Filezilla crashing when editing a file in Ubuntu 24.04

#1 Post by cst_rmrz » 2024-05-08 12:30

I use Filezilla everyday for work. It crashed maybe once or twice since I've used it. Since upgrading from Ubuntu 22.04 to 24.04, Filezilla always crashes during a specific behavior.

It will crash with 100% certainty when I:
  • right click on a file and choose 'View/Edit'
  • edit the file
  • locally save the file and close it
  • Filezilla gives a message that asks if you want to upload the file and overwrite the original
  • click to approve the overwrite
  • and Filezilla crashes, leaving the file on the server blank
This is really unfortunate behavior because I already closed the local temp file to upload it to Filezilla, so the file I was working on is basically lost since it becomes a blank file remotely, and is deleted locally.

Some details:
I installed Filezilla via

Code: Select all

sudo apt install filezilla
my default text editor is set to 'gedit' (/usr/bin/gedit)

Do you also experience this issue if using the official binaries distributed by us?

Running Kubuntu 24.04 LTS and I can confirm that this problem exists. Filezilla will crash on file upload using SFTP or plain FTP and leave the remote file blank with 0 KB.
This is a very fresh install of Kubuntu and Filezilla. Filezilla is installed using:

Code: Select all

apt install filezilla

Code: Select all

filezilla -v
Reading locale option from /home/user/.config/filezilla/filezilla.xml
FileZilla 3.66.5, compiled on 2024-04-01

Code: Select all

dpkg -l | grep filezilla
ii filezilla 3.66.5-2build2 amd64 Full-featured graphical FTP/FTPS/SFTP client
ii filezilla-common 3.66.5-2build2 all Architecture independent files for filezilla
ii libfilezilla-common 0.46.0-3.1build3 all build high-performing platform-independent programs (translations)
ii libfilezilla42t64:amd64 0.46.0-3.1build3 amd64 build high-performing platform-independent programs (runtime lib)

I can confirm the same. I use SFTP (with keyfile).
Upload produces empty remote file and then filezilla crashes. Download works.
The "close filezilla after queue completion" is off.

It does work and thank you, but the official Ubuntu package should be updated on the repos.

I agree, but this package is not managed by us, but third-party. Thus, you are very wrong here with your request, you need to contact the package maintainer.

I just told you that complaining here won't help. Repo packages might be a convenient way to maintain FileZilla on Linux, but you are essentially dependent on a third-party maintainer (not to mention they are almost always terribly outdated and behind). For that reason, we do not provide any support for repo packages and/or outdated versions.

If using a repo version, always try with the official packages from this website first, before posting the issue here. If the issue occurs with repo or old versions, but not with the latest versions from here, it's none of our business. Sounds harsh, but is simply a fact.

I have not complained. I came here to report it. I thought I did a good move to report it. My fault. It's fine all good.

It was a good move to report it. You got redirected to the entity you need to report that bug to, didn't you? There's usually a contact address or report link directly in the package manager's install page for that package. Well, if they will respond or even do anything, that's up for a guess. Al least, your *buntu version is not an outdated "LTS" one, where the repo packages are essentially abandoned and frozen.

We cannot mess with Linux that is not stable enough for business work. All non LTS releases are super buggy as if completely experimental. A company cannot play with that stuff. Workflow, stability and security is no1. But the bug I faced crashed a remote production site and luckily I saw it immediately.

My initial thought was to report it directly to you and none else, so other people do not lose work. I have my solutions such as Git so it's not so much about me at all. So.
Anyway, have a good day and get some rest.

I can confirm that the binary distributed from here (https://filezilla-project.org/download.php) works perfectly and is a testament to why we all love Filezilla :)
I am able to faithfully recreate the problems in the apt version 100% of the time. And I have not had a single bug in the official binary.

Thanks guys. Hopefully apt gets it together, because it sure is nice having filezilla launchable from the 'Show Apps' menu in Ubuntu.
