Speed drops from 400KB/s to 130 KB/s

#1 Post by Xenon » 2009-08-11 01:06

Hi,
I start an upload of about 360MB in size.
Initially i see the upload speed increase above 400KB/s as
shown in FZ (3.2.6.1) within about 15 secs. It then proceeds to
drop to around 130KB/s within about 20secs and stays there during the
remainder of the upload.
My cable service is 2.8m up/19.0m dn.
The same occurs with a download from the server although
the source is 1.0M up/ 6M dn.
This is the same from 2 different systems running XP.
Any thoughts with how i can keep the xfers above 400KB/s?

What's your latency to the server?

Latency to server is 82ms to 150ms with nothing going on.
Latency during xfer is 300ms - 400ms
Interesting that the latency to my provider Comcast
during the xfer is 400ms to 500ms. Static is 90ms.
Even while playing an online game it remains around 90ms.

Rather high latency, most likely the source for your problems. Try setting an upload speed limit of half your upstream connection speed in the settings dialog, that should prevent latency from becoming too high and as such choking everything.

Placed limits from 150 KB up to 300 KB. Each time it takes a dive.
By the way, I connected the system directly to the modem and
now I am testing directly to the comcast providers page.
Latency to the providers ftp page is 95ms with no xfers.

I italicized and bolded the important parts of the following quote.

Your actual bandwidth after those limits are reached is like 1.xx megabits up based on the transfer speeds you posted.

Regarding the download from the 1.0Mbit up/6.0Mbit down...
128kbytes is 1.0Mbit up line's approx. speed.

Right-on Cypress!
Sometimes I forget that my expectations are not that of Comcast!
Indeed, the upload is much higher for the first 5MB! It then takes the dramatic slide down into lala land. Unfortunate, that all that "fiber" bandwidth is sitting around idly for someone who "may" use it vs someone (me) who can use it.

Keep this in mind, all!! Look at the service offering!!

Know of an ocr96 link for about 40 bucks a month???? Don't spread the word, but I'll buy u lunch...ah several lunches !!
