Maximum UL/DL at a time ?

How many downloads/uploads at a time would you guys recommend i set my configuration to ? i got a lot of files since i run a gameserver and it can take tons of my time to download 1-2 files at a time. Also, if the downloads at a time is too many, will i lose some files ? Just adding some specs and internet connection to make it easier to decide:

Proccessor: Intel Core i7 Q720 @ 1.66 GHz (With 4 Physical cores and 4 virtual)
RAM: 8GB DDR3
Connection: 55/45 Mbit With LAN cable and 40/40 on Wireless (using Laptop)

I also got a desktop but i preffer to use my laptop to do these stuff since the desktops specs are: (dunno if it even matters :P)

Proccessor: Intel Pentium Dual Core E6300 2.88 GHz (Overclocked to 3.5 GHz)
RAM: 4GB DDR2
