v2.2.23 why not compatible with Win9X? Not because of Unicod

#1 Post by Zenitram » 2006-05-16 06:34

Why do you say that v2.2.23 is not compatible with Win9X because of Unicode?
This is not a good reason, because Unicode is available on Win9X OS with very small work.

How to do :
- You have to link the EXE to unicows.lib (either on the MS SDK, or for you, open-sourced version here: http://libunicows.sourceforge.net/ )
- Users must install (this is often done, because others software need it) Unicode layer for Win9X :

I'm not interested to invest my time to provide compatibiltiy with an inferior, insecure and outdated "operating system".

That said I don't mind if someone else creates and distributes versions of FileZilla made compatible with Win98. I just won't give support then.

I think Filezilla 3 wount support Windows 9X and Filezilla 2.X.X will support W9X till Filezilla 3 will be released as final.

I could say the same about people still using Windows 9x. It's time to move on. Some features like UTF-8 support just don't work properly in MBCS builds of FileZilla and thus Unicode is required. And without some tedious effort, that won't work with Win9x.

Which you shouldn't as it contains a security vulnerability.

I don't know if I'm allowed to say this here, please delete if it is against the rules.

@emptydrone, as you shouldn't use FZ 2.2.22 anymore, and with 2.2.23 not running on Win9x/ME, try SmartFTP. It supports Unicode, and FTPS (not SFTP!)

@botg, of course you are right, Win9x is an old OS. With today's hardware, there is no sense in running that OS anymore. But, there are still many older, slower PCs around which are unable to run 2000/XP (have even some machines with Win95 running - latest compatible FZ version is 2.2.19a). And I won't buy new PCs just because of FZ!

Get Linux + wine then.

With Linux you can run modern and secure software even on ancient hardware, something not possible with Windows 9x.

And? Windows 98SE isnt secure too like other OS.
On Linux my WLAN Card isnt supported and iam waiting for the next distro.
Maybe there will be an actual ndiswrapper wich support it.

Till then i use 2.2.22.
Maybe i find an other tool to upload my websites

No, Linux is no option here.
Whatever, I think I'll use SmartFTP with these systems as it supports Unicows.dll ...
