I tried to set up the FTP with my hostagator account; inputted the username and their name and the port number when asked - then was repeatedly told error could not connect to server - and I can see no way to remove this and have another go?

Do you use the correct login data for FTP? This is not the same you use for logging in on their website. If you don't know, ask them.
