Can't retrieve directory listing

#1 Post by rogerfgay » 2007-04-04 12:57

FileZilla server has been working fine. I've used it with SmartFTP and someone else has accessed it with -- I don't know what.

I downloaded FileZilla Client today and am trying to us it.

Can't retrieve directory listing. Searched the www for problem and have now PASSIVE MODEd the c*** out of whatever I could. Also; added external IP address in server's passive mode settings (didn't need that before ... just read it in a forum.)

Now this is all I get for my trouble:

Error: Disconnected from server
Error: Could not retrieve directory listing
Error: Timeout detected!

I'm not even sure that the server knows that the client gave up:

Connecting through Win command prompt ftp works fine, except LIST receives "Invalid command" error. Server in this case is CentOS box, unsure of specific FTP service.

Please check your router and/or firewall configuration.

Are you saying there's a bug in FileZilla client that leads to incomplete logs?

No. It seems you just didn't copy&paste everything.

a) Incorrect server configuration, you need to tell it your external IP address
b) Some router and/or firewall trying to be smart and tampering with the reply to the PASV command. Fails miserably ofc.

OK. I've tried to tell the server my external IP adress, but it didn't solve the problem. I suspect it's easy to do ... but I need specific instructions for this. What I did apparently wasn't right.

One step at a time: I haven't a clue what the firewall is doing, but maybe results will change when I have the external IP address in correctly.

Success .... I just downloaded and ran the client from the beta 3 release: no changes to the server. I'm connected.

Actually, I'd still like to know about setting the external IP address in the server. I can see that even the new version client has an option for using it. I found it set; maybe it's a bug that it works ! (or .... somewhere ... maybe it knows I'm on the same computer)

I'm currently working on a guide to proper network configuration. It's not yet complete, but you might find this useful already: http://filezilla-project.org/wiki/index ... figuration

That's pretty cool. I'll keep an eye on it. The sections I need on FileZilla configuration aren't in yet; but I'm sure I can benefit from reading the rest. It gives me some hope I won't have to flog around like a dying fish for the rest of my life whenever dealing with networks.

It looks very Wikipedia-like ... I enjoy that reference very much. It has generally made me smarter on more than one occassion. Perhaps in the not too distant future I'll be asking for tips on setting up such a page ... there are a couple of things I'll be called upon to add to Wikipedia when my current bunch of activities die down a bit.
