Local directory not being found

#1 Post by echo_mabel » 2015-10-11 16:11

Hi

I am connecting to the server perfectly apart from it is not showing my full local site i.e. I can't find 'downloads' or 'desktop' to access my downloaded zip file so I am totally confused! Strangely it looks it looks like a totally unfamiliar directory.

Please if someone could help I would be very grateful as I desperately need to upload a plug in over the top of a faulty one on my website.

many thanks
Sophie

The local side in FileZilla is your machine. Here you should find everything that's on the local drives. Note the local side does not show any server contents, nor does it need to be connected to any server to work.

The other site is the remote side, showing the resources on the server. How the remote directory structure looks is dependent on the server type you connected to. However, most FTP/SFTP servers do not present your local directory structure at all, even if the server runs on your machine. They only show what you configured to be shared, in a virtual directory structure that you have to shape. In the case of FileZilla Server, the user is locked into the server-configured Home directory, and all resources that are not inside that configured Home directory must be linked into it using Aliases.

In other words: If you want users to see your Desktop contents, you have to share it.

Thanks very much for replying. The issue is that on the left side I cannot see the files on my drives - they all look very unfamiliar :-(

Do I need to unlock something to see them? They all look very unfamiliar shortcuts to files I don't recognise.

Thank you!

FileZilla shows everything by default.

What is your operating system?

I can see folders such as 'Network', 'Users', 'System' and so on however noweher for me to upload my file from my desktop or downloads, which I am sure I have always done before. Do I need to save my file to one of those strange locations to access and upload? Also all of the files that I can see available are .app files and I need to upload a zip. Please see attached screenshot.

I am using a Mac.

Thanks again.

Your own files are stored inside your home directory which on most OS X system should be inside /Users

Same issue. Mac drills down into User directory but it does not mirror what is in my "finder" directory structure. Is there a limitation as to how many directories can descend when pointing to my local files in Filezilla?

There is no limit in FileZilla how deep you can go.

Sorry for being a newbie but, can FileZilla transfer infected files? Im worried if i download infected files from a backup, it may also infect local files?

FileZilla does not know if a file is infected. So, if no Antivirus software stops/prevents the transfer, then, yes, infected files are transferred like any other files. An infection will not happen from only transferring the file, but from executing it.
