I am trying to login to my new FileZilla Client but have never been able to get past this message: 530 Login authentication failed.

I have followed every ounce of direction from File Zilla, GoDaddy (where I'm hosted) and WordPress (whose templates I'm trying to upload). Nothing is working. Help!

Here is the info:

Response: 220---------- Welcome to Pure-FTPd [privsep] [TLS] ----------
Response: 220-You are user number 9 of 50 allowed.
Response: 220-Local time is now 19:49. Server port: 21.
Response: 220-This is a private system - No anonymous login
Response: 220 You will be disconnected after 3 minutes of inactivity.
Command: USER nycvpf
Response: 331 User nycvpf OK. Password required
Command: PASS **********
Response: 530 Login authentication failed
Error: Could not connect to server

Wrong username or password, or even wrong host.

I have the same problem, I also have an Godaddy account with Linux server. Is it the "Linux" the cause of the problem?

Absolutely not. In fact Linux is superior over Windows.

FTP user/password is separate from GoDaddy account user/password. Use the account manager to access your domain and (from their site):

Creating Additional FTP Users on your Shared Hosting Account

All of our Linux shared hosting plans and Windows hosting plans running IIS 7 allow you to create up to 50 additional FTP accounts.

Additional FTP accounts make it possible for you to create users that can upload and manage files in other directories and subdomains on your hosting account.
To Add an FTP User to Your Hosting Account

1. Log in to your Account Manager.
2. In the My Products section, select Hosting Account List.
3. Next to the hosting account you want to modify, click Open .
4. In the Settings section in your Hosting Control Center, click Manage FTP Users.
5. Click Add FTP User.
6. Enter the User Name and Password for the new FTP account.
7. Select the Path to use for this FTP user. There are three primary options:
* Type in the subdirectory you want to use.
* Use the root level directory (access to your entire hosting account).
* Create a new directory using the new FTP user name.
8. Click Save.

Hi, I'm able to have ftp access trought Iexplorer and Firefox (you know, ftp.example.com, then a box pop up asking for user and pwrd), but not with Filezilla (I have the lastest version).

It says "530 Login authentication failed"

I tried active or default mode: didn't change anything.

What did I mess up with the config?

I have Windows XP SP3

I wanted to go back with version 2. But it's not on the main site as (but, yes on the forum) someone already mentioned... Had to googlise...

Now everything is working well with the v2.2.32 8) :D

I have the same problem and I'm getting this error too:

Status: Resolving address of stcyprianssharpeville.org.za
Status: Connecting to 207.45.186.34:21...
Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
Response: 220---------- Welcome to Pure-FTPd [TLS] ----------
Response: 220-You are user number 2 of 50 allowed.
Response: 220-Local time is now 20:52. Server port: 21.
Response: 220-This is a private system - No anonymous login
Response: 220-IPv6 connections are also welcome on this server.
Response: 220 You will be disconnected after 30 minutes of inactivity.

Command: USER stcypria
Response: 331 User stcypria OK. Password required
Command: PASS *********
Response: 530 Login authentication failed
Error: Could not connect to server

I have contacted the technical support (gave them correct hostname, user name and passwords) and they said there seem to be a problem on the remote site and the technician said they did rest the system but I'm still getting the error.

I have seen some of the comments but it was still not clear on how does one resolve this.
Please help.

I had the same problem, ie, got a 530 Login authentication failed message even though I was absolutely sure I was using the correct username and password (since I reset it a quad-zillion times) :?. Here is how I fixed it for my particular setup (a Linux host account from GoDaddy):

I removed the spaces in the path name in 2 places:
  • 1. FTP User Path (on the screen where I defined the FTP user name, password, and path).

  • 2. and also the actual directory name.

Kudos to a bright tech support guy named James at GoDaddy who took a guess that panned out.

Hope this is helpful to somebody else. I checked the forum here and all over Google, but did not see this solution posted, or I would have been done 3 days ago!

Recently, I configured a new PC and downloaded the latest version of Filezila. Everything worked fine. Conclusion: something was wrong with the version 3 I had.

Had the same problem, fixed it by adding domain to the user.

instead of <username>

I used <username>@<domain>

For example:

Maquis@example.com

Here's my similar problem

Status: Waiting to retry...
Status: Resolving address of ftp.lauraannthiessenphotography.ca
Status: Connecting to 69.49.101.71:21...
Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
Response: 220 Website FTP Server Ready
Command: USER lauraannthiessenphotography.ca
Response: 331 Password required for lauraannthiessenphotography.ca.
Command: PASS *******
Response: 530 Login incorrect.
Error: Could not connect to server

What can I do?

Google is littered with appeals for help regarding Filezilla's 530 authentication error.

Needless to say I have the problem - unresolved to date..

What amaze me is not the smart-arse answers from individuals who ought to know better, but the lack of any sensible, practical advice as to how to use Filezilla in these circumstances.

This is a major FTP client, with what seems to be a major usage problem!

There must be an answer, apart from using other programmes.
