Connecting laptop to Firestick with a VPN on router . . .

I can use ES File Manager on my Firestick to get it's ftp address.

I installed FileZilla on my laptop.

I installed a VPN on my ASUS router. IPVanish.

Both the Firestick, and the laptop, are wired with Ethernet to the router.

The laptop connects quickly and easily to the Firestick with the VPN off. With it on, I get an error message,:

Connection attempt failed with "ECONNREFUSED - Connection refused by server".
Error: Could not connect to server

It's pain to turn the VPN off and on, disrupting other users on the router. Are there settings or changes I might make the VPN that would allow FZ to ftp between the stick and the laptop?

Yep, you totally can do, but you need a decent VPN service to be able to do that. It's thats simple.
