GnuTLS error -110 on LAN but not WAN

#1 Post by kayson » 2018-11-19 00:15

I'm using pure-ftpd 1.0.46 on Ubuntu 18.04 as the server, with TLS and certificates signed by Let's Encrypt. I have no issues connecting and transferring over WAN. I'm using passive mode, the ports are properly forwarded, and I've configured pure-ftpd to respond with its WAN IP.

With the most recent version of the filezilla client, however, I can not make a connection over LAN, as it complains about the TLS connection termination. I suspect part of the problem may be my DNS setup. I have a domain that points to my WAN, and that is what I usually use to connect to the server. But I have my local DNS server respond with the LAN IP for the ftp machine. So when I'm at home, my laptop makes the ftp connection to 192.168.1.2, but the PASV response is my WAN IP 74.x.x.x. Is this the problem? I'm not sure why this causes a TLS error, though. The server log has nothing unusual.

Client log:

This line seems to indicate that maybe filezilla is not making the data connection because the IPs don't match? Destination IP of data connection does not match peer IP of control connection. Not binding source address of data connection. But that would work just fine since my router would forward it appropriately.

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Response: 227 Entering Passive Mode (75,85,*,*,46,161)
Even though you are connected to the server using a private unroutable IP address, your server sends a public address in the PASV reply. I assume this is the public IP address assigned to you by your ISP. Typically NAT routers block traffic directed to its public IP coming from the private side of the connection.

Configure the server to only hand out send a public IP address in the PASV reply if the control connection is coming from a public IP.

Correct, that's my public IP. My router is configured to accept traffic addressed to the public IP from my LAN, and it follows port forwards properly. I've tested it with HTTP, and I think it used to work for passive FTP as well.

Does this indicate a problem on the client side?

Code: Select all

Destination IP of data connection does not match peer IP of control connection. Not binding source address of data connection.
pure-ftpd doesn't offer any configuration to do what you've suggested, so I'd have to move over to a new server. I'd prefer to find a client-side or server-config solution.

No, the error isn't client-side.

Try to check the server log to find out why it closes the connection.

No help unfortunately...

The interesting thing, though, is that if I tell pure-ftpd to respond to PASV with my local IP, everything works. The log for that connection attempt also has:

Code: Select all

Nov 19 11:22:21 fserver pure-ftpd: (administrator@192.168.1.3) [DEBUG] 150 Accepted data connection
Nov 19 11:22:21 fserver pure-ftpd: (administrator@192.168.1.3) [INFO] TLS: Enabled TLSv1.2 with ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384, 256 secret bits cipher

Nov 19 11:22:21 fserver pure-ftpd: (administrator@192.168.1.3) [DEBUG] 226 59 matches total
So it seems that for some reason using the external IP, the data connection isn't being made.

The filezilla log for that is:

I notice two things: first, when I'm connecting just using local IP's the PASV command isn't being sent until I download a file. Second, during this connection, the data connection says Binding data connection source IP to control connection source IP 192.168.1.3.

What does filezilla use as the data connection source IP when the PASV response is external? My original logs seem to indicate that the data connection isn't binding any source IP so maybe that's the problem? Is it not even attempting the connection?

As suspected, your router blocks the data connection.

Have you tried yet, while inside the LAN, to connect to the server using 75.85.178.33?

What does filezilla use as the data connection source IP when the PASV response is external? My original logs seem to indicate that the data connection isn't binding any source IP so maybe that's the problem? Is it not even attempting the connection?
If the PASV destination matches the control socket destination IP, FileZilla binds the source IP of the data connection to the same source IP as the control connection. Many servers implement a security mechanism against connection stealing that requires both the control and data connection have the same source address. This binding can be done if the destination IPs match as in that case we know there's a valid route from the bound source IP to the destination. If connected through the private IP to the server and receiving the public IP in the PASV reply, this cannot be done as it is not know a-prior whether there's a route from the source to the destination. To reach the destination IP a different source IP might have to be used.

In this case it is a red herring though, it has no relevance to this issue.
