insecure ftp connection

#1 Post by pulv10 » 2018-11-29 18:03

I just updated FileZilla which I have done hundreds of times but now
getting this error.

This server doesn't support FTP over TLS.

If you continue, your password and files will be sent in clear over the internet.

It has a box to check that says "Always allow insecure plain FTP for this server.

Ipage is my host called them and they gave me a new sign in that didn't work but
worked for them. Now I have to wait 24-72 hours.

Help!

Contact your hosting provider and request that they configure their server so that it supports FTP over TLS. For every half-decent server provider this should be a trivial task not taking more than 15 minutes.

I have been told by my provider that "through ftp tools like filezilla, it is already secure because filezilla has own security". I can't see how this is possible. Is this true??

No, it only exposes their incompetence. They are telling you lies so that you stop bothering them with requests they don't understand.

You have to switch to different provider. Consider asking your money back retroactively.

They replied and basically said that they do not provide access to an encrypted protocol like SFTP, but they seem convinced that just by using Filezilla will encrypt the credentials. I tried my best to explain, but it looks like a new provider will be the only solution. I hope more providers start providing encryption protocols. This seems like a huge security oversight and its such an easy fix!
