May I request an official FileZilla Client in Snap store?

Hello.

I'd love to see an official version of FileZilla in the Snap store.

Since Canonical is pushing their users to use snap, I think you will definitely benefit more. My problem is in the current ubuntu-bionic-universe source, I'm not sure if the maintainers are still alive or not it is still using 3.28 and has not been updated for a long time.

So, why this request here? As I read on Snapcraft forum, they ask us (the end-user) to beg the authors/devs to published your app/software there. Also, I'm not sure how to convince you enough, a lot of big players are already joining the ship for example Spotify, Telegram, InkScape, Simplenote, Visual Studio Code, and many more... As we all know, Ubuntu is also very popular and one of the most downloaded distros of all time. I really want to see it in the Snap store because finally I find myself enjoying Linux (Ubuntu to be specific) and manage to dumped Windows 10 for over a few months now. I can download the deb/source from your official website but I wish it was easier than a few single clicks within the Ubuntu software center (snap)

I hope to hear great news from you @botg

Thank you.

972.6MB download size? That's just ridiculous!

RIP FZ on bionic universe T_T

Image

As for https://filezilla-project.org/download.php?show_all=1

~/Downloads/FileZilla3/bin$ ./filezilla
Gtk-Message: 12:08:51.589: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"

Then,

sudo apt install libcanberra-gtk-module libcanberra-gtk3-module

Can someone give me a tip on how to create a shortcut in my gnome desktop application menu? Because I hate to run it from the terminal...

Don't use Linux distributions with a lazy packaging policy.

Try Manjaro, they are pretty up-to-date (FileZilla is at 3.40 in their repos).
Ubuntu actually has become one of the worst distros due to Canonical's doing.

5 months later...

So, just to clarify, you will not take my challenge and we won't see FZ in the snap store?

I tried all other distros including Majaro, Linux Mint, Fedora, Arch, Debian, Elementary, Solus, Zorin, Pop OS, you name it but I always find myself back to Ubuntu due to its simplicity and minimalistic approach through Gnome. Now that it has full support over snap, I really hope someone could maintain a snap package for easier installation and automatic future upgrade.

"sudo snap install filezilla"

Personally I have decided to no longer use Ubuntu because of its reliance on snap. It just wastes resources and shows how lazy they have become as a distribution. Now that Debian Buster is out, I'm switching to that.

I don't mean to be a dick but I still can't move on from this topic from half a year ago.

For those who happen to bump across this thread from organic search, apparently, someone (a chinese dude) has published an unofficial snap for FileZilla but it's not currently up-to-date (3.41.2+pkg-d9eb) and was last updated in April (as of the time writing this post).

Please @botg or @boco can you fork it and maintain an official snap release for the love of god or else you might see this thread goinna be revived again sometime in next year.

Additional reading regarding the huge Flatpak download size in my previous post above.

Hi there,

Politics aside because its not really relevant to me if you personally do or dont like snap packages, for me personally I would also be interested in a snap package for filezilla. I have been using snaps for a year or so now and they are certainly an improvement over apt repositories, and have no issue with a centralized app store like apple runs so if there is any movement on this I would be keen to know about it also :)

I'm not a huge fan of Snaps, but on the download page it says "Built for Debian 10.0 (Buster) 64bit edition. It is highly recommended to use the package management system of your distribution or to manually compile FileZilla if you are running a different flavour of Linux."

The wording would suggest that you should use your package manager, especially if you're not using Debian 10.0 (Buster), and even if you are.

However, whenever I download Filezilla using `apt` the version is years old. There is no to repository to add, and there is no official Snap.

So, what is the preferred way to install Filezilla on Linux?

You can use the version packaged by your distribution. If that version is too old, pester your package manager until they update the version, or switch to a more actively maintained distribution.

Alternatively you can compile from source.

Last but not least, you can always run the Windows version on Linux through Wine if it's an x86 system.
