You Guessed it: Cannot Connect

#1 Post by Paukert » 2019-05-19 14:37

I've been trying for months (off and on) to connect to my website to do edits using FileZilla. FileZilla has always worked perfectly in the past, until a few months ago. I will shout your name to the heavens in praise if you can help here. Desperate! :-)

Here is the error message I receive when I try:

Status: Waiting to retry...
Status: Resolving address of ftp.thepaukerts.net
Status: Connecting to 66.96.146.58:21...
Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
Error: Could not connect to server

Here's the weird (and diagnostic?) part. I can't connect while on my home wifi. But I HAVE gone to hotels and to the public library and CAN connect there with NO problem! So it's not a firewall issue. And it is not a problem with my website provider. And I SAVE the login parameters that are successful in FileZilla QuickConnect and use that to try at home, so it isn't a case of typing in the wrong parameters. I have tried to connect on other laptops in my home on the same wifi network with no success on those, either, so it's not a problem with my laptop.

Grateful for any advice, thanks.

Gary

Code: Select all

17:47:15	Status:	Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
17:47:15	Response:	220 apollo FTP Server Ready

17:47:15	Command:	AUTH SSL

The server works. Where is it located, in relation to yourself? It looks like a home FTP server (IIS, about the worst one could choose) that might be in the same LAN as you are.

Hi Boco, thank you for trying to help.

I'm trying to connect to Verio.com. They are my webspace provider, after taking over a previous company that I used. Their website doesn't say where they are, but Wikipedia says their headquarters is in the Denver area.

I'm physically located outside of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I get my internet through a company called Xplornet.

I've tried talking to both Verio (webspace) and Xplornet (ISP) and neither has been helpful in figuring out why I can't make a simple FTP connection through FileZilla.

Thanks,

Gary

Well, in this case, it's not a home server. Scratch that.

Could you try with wired Ethernet? Although I don't believe it's the WiFi, rather a router/ISP problem.

Can you connect to other FTP servers or do they also fail?

Well, after months (off and on) of trying to figure this out, here's what it was.

I had tried 'too many times' to connect via FTP. That would be via FileZilla and my webcam software. I exceeded their security number and so they BLACKLISTED my IP Address. No notification. No email. Nothing that would be HELPFUL. No, apparently I was just supposed to discern it by mental telepathy through the ether. I had called their help desk a number of times but no one thought to check the blacklist.

I don't know. I'm just a neophyte at all this. But I would expect better. When I think of the hours I wasted trying to figure this out. Grrrr.

Thanks for your help, though!

No problem, but idiocy of server administrators is hard to identify. 8)
