So I got Filezilla up and running after going thru trying to get the free version to work with Catalina, which didn't work, y'all might want to update that version to 64-bit for the Mac sometime soon, then going to Cyberduck, which is just confusing as all ever, then trasmit or transmate or whatever it's called, that didn't work either, so now I'm signed up for the trial 7-day version of Filezilla, which is the closest thing I've used that looks like an FTP client I used back in high school and college. I've got everything setup for the most part, but when I go to volumes and select my external drive it tells me that "I (you) do not have permission to list this directory". I looked around a little bit in the file menus and preferences, but couldn't find anything that would allow me to setup file permissions or give access to that entire directory/volume/drive. I'm thinking it might be in system preferences, but I don't know for sure. Thanks!

One place to set generic access permissions would be in system prefs. There might be a second one under the Edit menu, but maybe only for store-bought versions.

You know one of my habits when I'm having trouble with a program or app, is to peruse the forums before I actually post a comment, to get a feel of how the developers and other mods treat their clientele. You and botg, who I'm assuming have some fairly deep involvement with the Filezilla software, are quite rude to the people who are supporting your app/program. You are sarcastic and disrespectful to people asking simple questions, you provide puzzling, brief responses to people who are asking questions that obviously need a more detailed answer (such as my question), and the general feel I get from both of you is that your just too busy or maybe too smug to help anyone here who actually requires it, which is frustrating and a real shame, as we're the ones providing your paycheck. So after calling you out for all of your repeated behavior, could you please elaborate on the incredibly vague answer you just gave me, because you're the one with the answers to my questions and I'm the one seeking them and what you provided is basically leading me on a (brief) wild goose chase.... If you require proof for any of the things I just wrote about, all you need to do is scroll through any of the forums here...

First, I'm not involved in the FileZilla project beyond moderating the forum. I'm only a user like you. As such, there is NO paycheck, doing this in my free time, which is not always enough for giving long, verbose answers. There's also a mystic thing called "real life" that repeatedly needs attention.

Second, I don't own a Mac and never will. My knowledge of the Mac version is zilch. I can only repeat what was said before by @botg, who is the one and only developer of FileZilla.
I only vaguely know that Mac OS has a place in the preferences where you can set or remove folder access permissions for apps, but I don't know where exactly. And I know that at least the FileZilla Pro versions from their Store have a second entry in the Edit menu where you can configure access permissions for their sandbox. For obvious reasons, I cannot look it up or check, though. Thus, I tried to give a hint where to search.

Third, the "rudeness" you mentioned is an interpretation thing. Written sentences (especially by non-native English writers) don't always carry their meaning well. Plus, I have an aversion against smileys. Real rudeness will occur, but only in response to equally rude posts made in the first place. I cannot speak for @botg, he's a completely other type of person.

Hi, I am having this same trouble. I am not able to open any of my local files, except the "downloads" folder on my iMac.
Running macOS catalina version 10.15.6.

I cannot open any external drives either. I have checked permissions on the folder and they are read/write/execute, so should be visible. I have also enabled Filezilla in the system preferences 'security & privacy' to allow full disk access to filezilla pro (and restarted filezilla pro). I still get the same message: "you do not have permission..."

Does anyone have any other ideas on what could be the issue?

I only use Filezilla occasionally and the last time (5 weeks ago) it worked perfectly...

Do you have the Mac Store-bought version? If yes, there is a second place in the "Edit" menu of FileZilla where access must be granted, in order to get around Apple's Sandboxing mechanism.

Other than that, writing is only possible inside your User profile. Essentially, all system directories are protected by the system and Mac OS will deny any Write access to them.
