I've been trying to download FileZilla using Chrome and Edge, in both instances the download is blocked and file deleted by McAfee with message saying file contains a virus.
Did a virus really sneak in or is this a known issue with some antivirus programs?

Some AVs simply do not like the third-party offers in the default sponsored installers (Adware, could be called a PUP, Possibly Unwanted Software). In order to sell more copies, they cry wolf, err, virus on any occasion.

Try the advanced download page, the packages there do not contain offers.

As long as we are sure no virus got introduced in the package somehow

Do like this: Ask your AV vendor for a detailed explanation about their claim. If there really is a virus, they can easily proof it in excruciating detail.

That's fair, will do, if anything to make them reconsider their decision
