Need Latest FileZilla Client that Works on Win7 x64

#1 Post by psmith2100 » 2020-09-23 13:35

I was running FileZilla client 3.47.1 on 64-bit Windows 7 just fine, and I noticed an update was available. I upgraded to 3.50.0 on 9/22, and the installation went fine, but I cannot open FileZilla Client at all. Then I realized the Download page says in small print under the big green download button that "The 64bit versions of Windows 8.1 and 10 are supported." I need to download the latest version that supports Windows 7, but there is no option to download previous versions on the Download page.

I cannot find any statement in the Version History that says Windows 7 is no longer supported. I did find the statements below that say XP and Vista are no longer supported.

3.25.2-rc1 (2017-04-23)
Bugfixes and minor changes:
MSW: Windows Vista is no longer supported

3.8.1-rc1 (2014-05-25)
New features:
MSW: Windows XP and derivatives are no longer supported. Minimum supported operating system is Windows Vista.

FileZilla 3.50 still runs fine on Windows 7. Is your Windows 7 updated (ESU)? 32bit or 64bit?

My Windows 7 is Windows 7 Home Premium x64 with Service Pack 1.

As soon as I upgraded to 3.50, I could not even open FileZilla Client. I click on the icon, and nothing happens. I see it in task manager, but the FileZilla window never appears. I had to do a system restore to last restore point to go back to FileZilla 3.47.1 for it to work again.

Is your Windows 7 updated (ESU)?
Question is still open, are you on ESU license (updates till September) or is the Windows 7 non-ESU (updates until January)?

I assume I have the non-ESU version because the article below seems to indicate ESU does not apply to home users running Windows 7 Home Predmium for which support ended January 14, 2020.

Is there another way to tell?

Yes, OK, Home Premium is not eligible, so it's non-ESU.

I'm just trying to test this in a VM. FileZilla 3.50 runs fine on a non-patched Windows 7 SP1, but MS could have been fudged up something with their latest updates in January (as they did with the Wallpaper being slightly broken).

FileZilla Client 3.47.1 worked fine on my Windows 7x64 Home Premium machine before I updated to 3.5.0 and 3.47.1 works fine again after a system restore, so I don't understand how MS updates in January could be the issue with FileZilla Client 3.50 when FileZilla Client 3.47.1 works perfectly fine.

My Windows 7x64 Home Premium machine has not received any OS updates since January as we confirmed it is non-ESU. Per the screenshot below, the only MS updates in 2020 are for O365, and I have not installed any software recently. My machine is very static.

Something has changed with FileZilla Client between 3.47.1 and 3.50 that does not work with my Windows 7x64 Home Premium machine.

I have checked this in a VM and am at a loss - everything works as it always did.

Do you have any (especially inactive) network paths, these can delay opening of the GUI for a long time?

Try to temporarily rename the %APPDATA%\FileZilla and %LOCALAPPDATA%\FileZilla directories while FileZilla is closed. It will then start like freshly installed. Does it open now?

I have a wired GigE connection and a WiFi connection. Windows automatically selects the GigE as preferred. This has never been an issue before, and is not currently an issue with 3.47.1.

By "network paths", i refer to shared resources from other machines with a drive letter assigned by Windows. With only one PC, probably not.

Is there any update to this? 3.50 still does not work on my Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 machine.

I have tested this, Win7 Home Premium SP1, fully updated (non-ESU). FileZilla starts immediately. The problem you are experiencing cannot be reproduced, unfortunately.

What you could still try, is holding CTRL+ALT+SHIFT immediately after starting FileZilla. This will reset its screen layout to defaults and may fix the case where FileZila starts off-screen (a known Windows bug).

Other than that, try to reboot to Safe Mode. Does it start in this mode, there could be an interaction with other software on your machine.

You have to update to a more modern operating system.

I cannot upgrade my OS at this time, so my original question remains. Can I download older versions of FileZilla Client? I only see the option to download 3.50.0.

I would like to download 3.47.1 again which I know works, and I would like to download 3.48.1 and 3.49.1 and see if one of these later versions work.

I would like to install the latest version that works with my machine.

I reinstalled 3.50.0 to try holding CTRL+ALT+SHIFT immediately after starting FileZilla, and that did not work. Also, ALT+TAB does not show FileZilla as being open, but filezilla.exe is running in Task Manager. I found the FileZilla_3.47.1_win64-setup.exe file I downloaded in March 2020 and downgraded back to 3.47.1 and everything works.

I would like to download 3.48.1 and 3.49.1 to see if one of these later versions work on my machine. Is that possible?
