I have set up a vsftpd server on a ubuntu machine. I have all the ports fowarded on the router. I can access without a problem on my lan. However, if i try to access via public IP, it gives me login incorrect. I am using the correct credentials for sure.

Check if the router has its internal FTP server activated (often used for NAS functionality) and is thus blocking the port.
