Both are listed.

Code: Select all

ping -4 u62402230.1and1-data.host
The -4 parameter forces IPv4.

Code: Select all

C:\Windows\System32>ping -4 u62402230.1and1-data.host

Pinging u62402230.1and1-data.host [217.160.231.106] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 217.160.231.106: bytes=32 time=30ms TTL=51
Reply from 217.160.231.106: bytes=32 time=30ms TTL=51

Reply from 217.160.231.106: bytes=32 time=30ms TTL=51

Ping statistics for 217.160.231.106:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 30ms, Maximum = 30ms, Average = 30ms
Pinging seems to work fine. I just tested my sites via FZ and find that most work instantly now. Unfortunately, the most active site which I need to login to at least once a week is now impossible to connect to, no matter how long I wait.

Would it be best if I contact my host's support team?

For testing FTP servers while ruling out your client, you can always use our test site https://ftptest.net. Unfortunately, it doesn't work for SFTP, yet.
Testing your connection general IPv4, IPv6 and DualStack capabilities can be done with https://filezilla-project.org/conntest.php.
Would it be best if I contact my host's support team?
Your pings are good, the general connections work. Protocol-specific problems are still a possibility. Contacting them is still a good idea, even if it's just for ruling out any issues on their side.

Ok, so I have been in contact with them and they asked me to enable debugging. At first, I had no problem connecting but after closing the connection and retrying it was impossible to connect. I sent the debug log to their support team for analysis. If you are curious, here is what it said:

So, I have just heard back from my host's support team and their reply is, in my mind, rather unsatisfactory. They said "After having evaluated the FileZilla debug log, the issue you are encountering clearly comes from the FileZilla program itself [Error: FATAL ERROR: Network error: Software caused connection abort.]. To solve this issue, we invite you to change your FTP client because there is nothing we can do from our side."

They don't even understand common network error messages, yet claim to be a hosting company... I bet they didn't even look into their server log whether they got a connection attempt in the first place.

The "Software" in this case is the operating system's TCP stack. One reason the operating system might abort a connection is because it is not receiving replies from a remote server, for who knows what reason.

Going by their reply, have you tried a different operating system yet?

I have tried on 3 different laptops but all 3 run on Windows 10.

Following your comments "I bet they didn't even look into their server log whether they got a connection attempt in the first place.

I asked them to attempt connecting to my server using FileZilla. They have just responded saying they were unable to connect but that they also tried with another FTP client called CyberDuck and had no problems. They insist the problem is coming from FileZilla.

Ok, well I know you feel that going back to the previous version would be a waste of my time but, given the circumstances, I would like to try it anyway as I never had an issue until this update. Perhaps you could give me a link to download the previous version?

It is quite possible that a Windows update is responsible. I'm surprised that nobody else is having any connection issues.

Thank you. Well, I am sorry to tell you this but the last working version I had was v3.52.0.2 so I installed that. I am able to connect to all my sites without any problem so, I must conclude the issue is indeed within the v3.52.2 build.

Pure coincidence. There have been absolutely no changes to connection establishment between these two versions.

Since this is an intermittent issue, it intermittently working again coincided with you trying the other version.

Sorry, I cannot agree. I just tested both using 2 different laptops at practically the same time. There was only a few seconds in between the 2 tests. The first shows an immediate successful connection using v3.52.0.2. The second shows a failure using v3.52.2. Something is clearly wrong.

Does your firewall block one version but not the other?
