FileZilla Enhanced Security Options

#1 Post by DavidB » 2021-04-25 18:39

After my old computer died, I am now working on a brand-new computer running Windows 10, and I just upgraded to FileZilla 3.52.2.

Previously, I had uploaded web pages via the most basic options in the FileZilla menu:
Protocol: FTP
Encryption: Only use plain FTP (insecure)

I would now like to learn about the more secure options for uploading pages to a web site.

Under "Protocol", there are three options:
FTP - File Transfer Protocol
SFTP - SSH File Transfer Protocol
Tardigrade - Decentralized Cloud Storage

Under "Encryption" there are four options:
Use Explicit FTP over TLS if available
Require explicit FTP over TLS
Require implicit FTP over TLS
Only use plain FTP (insecure)

I am not a networking/IP/Comms expert. After exploring the FAQ and Wiki, I did not see any concise explanations of how the various options differ from each other. Are one or two communication configurations recommended over others? Are some not available to me? (Perhaps only available to Linux users? I have no idea.)

Is there a tutorial that walks green users through the various differences and how to use them?

I am working from home; no LAN, network or firewall.

Can you recommend the set of options that would provide me the highest level of security?

Both SFTP and FTP over TLS (FTPS) are secure. Pick any one your server supports.
