Cannot convert SSH key to .ppk format

#1 Post by tnolram » 2021-07-22 11:31

I've just installed FileZilla client 3.55 on macOS 10.14 (Mojave).

I want to create a new connection via SFTP to a remote server. I have a private key generated with terminal using ssh-keygen, connection to the server via terminal works smoothly.

When I submit the private key in the site manager, it asks me to change the format to .ppk, which I confirm.

However, after typing the passphrase I get an error message:

I restarted my MacBook and re-installed FileZilla already, but the problem persists. I checked the package content of FileZilla.app, fzputtygen is in the same folder as FileZilla.
Does anyone know what might be the issue here?

Hello,

I've got exactly the same problem (Filezilla 3.55.1 and MacOS 11.5.2 BigSur) and I'm a bit stuck now. Does anybody know how to solve this?

Thanks and cheers!

As a workaround, I installed puttygen on a Windows machine, brought my private key over with a USB stick, converted the key there and brought it back to my Mac. I could not find an easier way to do this (alternatives involved installing a virtual machine and run Windows on the Mac), but maybe someone else has a better idea?
It works but is of course a bit of a hassle and should not be necessary.

Hi, here I got a solution FYI.

The reason my SSH key doesn't work on Filezilla is that I generated a password along with my key pair. once I regenerated my key pair without a password then tried it with Filezilla. This time I wasn't asked to convert my SSH key anymore and I've been able to use my key in Filezilla.
