Basic questions from new Forum member

#1 Post by Charles4950 » 2022-06-12 02:42

I am new to both FTP and Filezilla. I have installed the basic version of Filezilla on my computer and I have bought the manual. I have a few questions for which I have not been able to find answers on the manual:
On site manager under the ‘General’ tab, which IP address I need to put in the box called ‘Host’, my IPV4 Address or the IP address from my ISP?
On site manager under the ‘General’ tab what number should I put in the box called ‘Port’?
On site manager under the ‘General’ tab, ‘User’ and ‘Password’ should be entered to log on what?
Thanks

First, please note the Manual is for FileZilla Pro and many of the features and protocols described there will be missing from the free version.

The reason why these three questions are not answered in the Manual is simple: They cannot be answered because we don't know. FileZilla is an FTP client and nothing else. That means that if you want to use it, you must already know the IP (or URL), port (if any given), and login data of an FTP server you want to connect to (please note that we are not running any servers and don't offer any services nor online storage).
You could also set up an FTP server of your own, using the "FileZilla Server" software, also offered here. Then, the IP would be the one of the machine running the server, and port plus login data would be the ones you did set up in the FTP server configuration.

Thanks for your reply.
Your clarification about the features and protocols covered in the manual, but not actually present in the basic version of FileZilla is noted.
As far as my questions and your answers, what I am trying to do is to download some computer code available at ftp://ftp.numerical.rl.ac.uk/pub/MRandC/oo.f90. The computer code provider does not supply any other information, so I assume that the above ftp address is all is needed to download the computer code. Am I wrong?
Also, my understanding before reading your answers was that all the information listed in my 3 questions is part of my computer set-up and not part of the set-up of the computer from which the download is to be performed. For instance, the IP address mentioned in question #1 is the IP of my own computer. Could you please clarify?
Thanks

Yes, you only need to enter (or copy) the URL minus the ftp:// (that's also known as a Hostname) of the FTP server into the Hostname field of FileZilla's QuickConnect toolbar (or the Site Manager if it is for keeps). That FTP server is what's called a "public" or "anonymous" service, so, you don't need any username and password (FileZilla will fill in the data for anonymous access automatically). Port is not required, either, as the service is using the default well-known port.
Also, my understanding before reading your answers was that all the information listed in my 3 questions is part of my computer set-up and not part of the set-up of the computer from which the download is to be performed. For instance, the IP address mentioned in question #1 is the IP of my own computer. Could you please clarify?
No. All information entered into the Site Manager is the data from the computer running the FTP server. For the default Passive Mode FTP to work, no configuration needs to be done to your computer, it runs out of the box.

Many thanks for your detailed explanations and for answering all my questions.

Actually there are two manuals. One for the free version and one for FileZilla Pro.

Really? I cannot find the Manual for the free version anywhere, I'm only offered the FileZilla Pro Manual and the FileZilla Pro CLI one. Maybe the free manual is not included in my license?

Important info for me, as otherwise I'm talking bullsh*t here (I mean, even more than usual :))

Based on the attached page that does not list the word 'PRO', my guess is that the manual that I have is for the free version. Could somebody kindly confirm?
Thanks

Yes, that's the manual for regular FileZilla.

I bought it at the following website: https://filezillapro.com/products/ (about $5). When I downloaded the free version of the software, I was asked if I wanted to buy the manual. I know, it is a little confusing, the website is called /filezillapro.com....instead of just filezilla.com

The manual for the free version is included inline in your FileZilla Pro manual. Strip out all Pro-specific parts, remove " Pro" and what you are left with is essentially the manual for the free version.

The big green button on https://filezilla-project.org/download.php?type=client shows a selection.

Well, never seen it, appears only with Javascript enabled. Furthermore, I'm always using non-sponsored downloads.
