Larges Files Download Becomes Corrupted

#1 Post by guillaumesoucy » 2022-06-14 08:07

Hello,

When downloading larges files, they've become corrupted. I notice when it reach the end of the transfer, the transfer is continuing for few seconds and is downloading few more megabytes of data.

I'm downloading a 700MB iso file from one of my TrueNAS FTP server located in my server room. I'm in another town located at approx 10-11 KM from that location.

Is there a setting in FileZilla Client that I can tweak to avoiding that data corruption?

It do happen with the Linux version and with the Windows version as well. I didn't tried yet with the Mac version.

Thank-you,

Guillaume

I'm using plain FTP.

When downloading large files from the same local network, those large files did not get corrupted.

Networks are unreliable, corruption is always a possibility if not using strong cryptography,.

Try switching to FTP over TLS.

I was downloading at 256KB/s I'd remove the limit and now running at full speed the files didn't get corrupted.

Is slow FTP transfers can also cause corruption?

Nope. But, each change in parameters can trigger a fault in any device or software, along the way.

Limiting the transfer speed in FileZilla only limits how fast FileZilla accepts or sends data, such a setting does not affect the FTP server nor the rest of the network along the way. As such, if there's faulty buffer implementation somewhere, the buffer could overrun and send extra data. Often you will then notice that the transfer is not smooth, but happens in bursts. Faster transfers will work around (but not fix it).
The recommendation still is to use FTP over TLS, which is integrity-protected on the packet level.

Okay, will try find a way to make FTPS working on my TrueNAS server. I just tried and it was a fail, will need to post on their forums.

Also I do have another question for you guys, I do have issues while streaming content with Kodi from the same TrueNAS servers using plain FTP. The content often stop playing randomly. Is switching to FTPS could also fix that issue? Is is possible that the video files get corrupted somewhere. Same as my ISO files that I was transferring previously today?

Thank-you,

Guillaume

That is a possibility.
