Port 21 is standard for FTP.

Port 22 is for SSH.

That said - the server you are trying to connect to cannot be found using the service (SFTP) and port (22) that you are trying.

Retry, using FTP as the protocol and port 21 -- that is "standard" FTP configuration --

According to the support for the rootsweb site, you are most likely trying to upload to the wrong server. Also notes that they use FTP, which would be on port 21 (for future reference).

You will need to work with their support -- this is not a FileZilla issue.

Since Oct. 12, 2023, I've also been having this same problem trying to connect to my freepages website using FileZilla. I have been successfully using FileZilla to connect to the freepages server for years, and even did so on Tuesday, Oct. 10. But when I tried again on Thursday, I couldn't connect to their server. RootsWeb says their server is working fine. I didn't change any protocols in FileZilla's site manager. Neither FTP with Port 21 not SFTP with Port 22 are working now.

The only thing that changed between Oct. 10 and 12 were some Windows 11 updates. I wonder if one of them is the culprit.

Highly unlikely that a Windows Update caused this.

I agree.

But I don't have great hope that my issue can be resolved. RootsWeb is getting ready to disable all freepages passwords, so they don't really have great incentive to investigate this issue and try to resolve it.

Hi Jared.... I am pulling my hair out trying to fix this exact same issue. Everything worked fine until about October 12. Unfortunately I had deleted my Rootweb genealogy files and came back a couple days later to upload the new version. Now I can't get in with the same issue you are having and my site is blank.

I have tried changing my password and still I get the same error:

Status: Connecting to sitesuser.rootsweb.com...
Response: fzSftp started, protocol_version=11
Command: open "cassb@sitesuser.rootsweb.com" 22
Error: Could not connect to server

I don't think they have shut down logins yet, so something is wrong (I think) on their end. But when I write and ask to look into it, I got this response:

Our site is working as designed. The working theory about these ongoing FTP errors for RootsWeb hosted site users is that non-US traffic being blocked by a security setting. As we checked a few of the emails who are having the same issue, the users reporting trouble do seem to be outside of the USA.

RootsWeb has been a US only property website, therefore, servers outside the US has been blocked.

We suggest to use only US VPN servers and please connect to the Rootsweb servers using FileZilla immediately. Please contact Filezilla support if it doesn't fix the issue.

We hope this helps and we apologize for any inconvenience the situation may have caused.

I am not outside the USA. I don't know what else we can do if they refuse to try to help.

The folks at RootsWeb need to come up with a new working theory about why people can't connect to their server any more, because you and I and another person here named Greg are all based in the U.S. I also tried connecting using a U.S. VPN -- no effect.

Something must have changed on their end. I don't know if they're going to try to fix it so people like us can do our last edits to our websites before passwords are disabled -- but I hope they figure out what's going on and fix it.

As I just posted in my original thread on this issue: I have great news. Tonight when I checked to see if I could connected to the freepages server, I was prompted to install a FileZilla update first. I did so, and then I was immediately able to connect to the freepages server.

Whatever got fixed, I'm VERY grateful.

The FileZilla update has not changed anything related to connecting or logging in, it is purely coincidental to the server you are connecting to having be fixed.

I can confirm... they must have fixed their server. I can connect to Rootsweb again now.

Hi, the language of the forums is English.

Do you actually have an SFTP server running at that 192.168.15.188 IP address (which is a local IP)?
