File editing does not work

#1 Post by TobyManning » 2023-04-27 08:54

I am running Filezilla, updated to latest version 2 minutes ago, with Firefox (Windows 11).

I normally edit the html directly in the source file (left hand pane); right click on file then select "edit" from the dialogue box. The file then normally opens in notepad.

But when I tried it today I got an error message "The file 'C:Users\Toby Manning\.......\index' cannot be opened.
The associated program ("C:ProgramFiles\WindowsApps\Microsoft.Windows Notepad_11.2302.16.0_x54_8wekyb3.....\Notepad.exe"%f) could not be found.
Please check your filetype associations."

I have not done anything to "File Associations" (whatever they are).

Please can somebody help?

Toby.

You can change your file type associations in the settings dialog of FileZilla.

That's the "new" Notepad. It has its version number in the path, and whenever it is updated, the path changes and the association breaks. Congratz, MS. AFAIK, non-Administrators cannot even reach the executable directly, I never could even open the WindowsApps directory as normal user.

Recommendation: Use a better text editor, such as Notepad++, and associate the file extensions with NP++ directly in FileZilla, as @botg pointed out.

botg: Sorry, not very helpful.

baco: Thank you very much. Your diagnosis is correct. I downloaded Notepad++ and (after some work to find out what the new path was, i.e. "C:\Program Files\Notepad++\notepad++.exe") successfully got it to work.

Yes, it's called Management. They probably run it themselves.

I'm using Windows 11
I went into Filezilla settings under File Associations
I removed what was there for Notepad and clicked ok
Then I went back to edit the file with notepad and chose Custom and found Notepad in the System32 folder
Now it works fine.
This is what is there now:
/ C:\Windows\System32\notepad.exe

Hi Kim, there are actually two Notepad variants right now. One is the Inbox app, essentially the one you discovered. It is in a static location and can be associated easily.
Then, there's the new "Store" UWP type App, which is stored in the WindowsApps directory (not accessible for normal peasants). The location is dynamic as it includes the App revision.

Maybe the one in C:\Windows\System32 can act as redirector once the Store app has taken over. In this case, one would always associate to the static one and ignore the UWP App. I can't test, I'm either using Windows 7 or have disabled all Store stuff when not.
