Access over a shared network connection
I'd like to be able to use FileZilla to transfer files between two of my PCs. They are connected with an ethernet cable and ethernet sharing.
For some reason, it is impossible to connect and the connection just times out.
Anyone??

Re: Access over a shared network connection
What do you mean exactly? Interconnected by a hub/switch or crossover cable? Both have an IP manually assigned, if there's no DHCP server in the LAN? Are the ports opened in the server machine's firewall?

Re: Access over a shared network connection
Crossover cable. Internet connection fine. Works from another machine on our home network downstairs, or for remote users.
Re: Access over a shared network connection
A real crossover cable directly connects two PCs, Internet is not possible that way.
Anyway, FileZilla can only connect to FTP and SFTP servers. So, in order to transfer files, the other machine must be running such a server to make the target (or source) resources available to FileZilla.
FileZilla cannot use SMB shares (Windows networking) directly.
Also, neither FTP nor SFTP is a P2P (peer-to-peer) protocol, you need to have a server and a client.

Re: Access over a shared network connection
Well it works here, and I used the adapter settings to hook the server PC to the other PC using the standard Windows network sharing option. No idea why the connection out to the other PC says "unidentified network", regardless, internet works fine on BOTH PCs.
It's a standard severe client setup, and as stated, it works fine with our other PC downstairs, which connects to the internet using WiFi

Re: Access over a shared network connection
Ahah! Seems that doing this in effect sets up a separate network between the two machines. So rather than the 192.168.1.187 static IP address I use for my main PC and the server, another IP address is assigned. This is a temporary arrangement whilst I move stuff from the old to the new PC, so I'll stick to mapped network drives.
Re: Access over a shared network connection
You should have mentioned you are doing this in addition to your normal network connection, essentially acting as a bridge or gateway. You will be able to access an FTP server using the assigned IP for the shared network. Should also be accessible from other machines, as it looks to be in the same segment.

Re: Access over a shared network connection
Not sure what I didn't say! Simply said I was using ICS!
Re: Access over a shared network connection
It doesn't matter how the machines are connected to each other, what matters is this:

Re: Access over a shared network connection
My base machine, to which the other machine was connected to use ICS has both the server and the database. All accessed fine by people all over the world.
Re: Access over a shared network connection
OK. Mentioning this right in the first post would have prevented any such confusion. My reply assumed you'd be using a naked crossover connection, without any further ado.

Worth noting that not everyone is a networking whizz!
