What Welcome Message?

#1 Post by qpackard » 2024-02-16 09:09

I get the following message but I am not aware of any welcome message that my home media server should be sending. What can it mean? FWIW my Plex client has no problem connecting with the Plex server, but FZ and Files cannot seem to make the connection. What am I missing?

Status: Connecting to 192.168.xx.xxx:32400...
Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
Error: Connection closed by server
Error: Could not connect to server
Status: Waiting to retry...

A welcome message, or greeting, is mandatory and part of every FTP connection. It signals to the client that the server is working and in fact an FTP server.
Status: Connecting to 192.168.xx.xxx:32400...
32400 isn't the usual FTP port. Are you sure your media search is speaking FTP on that port?

Yes, that is the correct port, 32400, which is specified by the Plex server.
I have almost the same setup and all I get is Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
Does anyone have a solution?

There's a web server listening on that port, not a FTP server, as far as I can tell from reading Plex's documentation and installing the server myself.

What led you to think there's a FTP server listening on that port?

I set up an FTP server using vsftpd as documented at https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-setup-an ... untu-linux. I don't know the difference between a web server and an FTP server, but I am not sure if my ignorance on that point is germane. I'm thrashing about trying to transfer files from my pc to the server. I thought it would be more convenient to send them directly to the server rather than copying them to a portable SSD and then copying them back up to the server.

I have been able to connect to the server at my user's home directory using Nautilus and Terminal, now that I set up vsftpd, but I cannot get to root which is where lives the folder that I seek.

An ftp server tipically listens on port 21. Try that.

I still get the message on Windows 10 home, Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS, I also got the same message using another FTP GUI, cannot remember the name but I found it on Altenative To... website. I tried several clients, all got the same message, waiting for welcome. I noticed that there are a lot of messages on this forum with the same problem, so it is not likely my setup, unless we are all making the exact same mistake. I wish we could hear from FZ.

I have two work-arounds, it's very likely that you all already know this and I'm just catching up.
Either copy the flies to a portable medium, walk it over and upload the files to the server, or, upload your files to a cloud service, like Google Drive, and download the files to your server.

Filezilla 3.66.5
Server: Ethernet: Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS
Client: Wireless: Win 10 Home

Some peculiar things have happened since I last logged in. In the server I have set Sharing to Allow, and I have enabled UFW and opened ports 21, 22. I can now connect from Windows, using the command mstsc, which opens Remote Desktop and places me into the server, where I can open, run and close programs, I can access Terminal and Nautilus. So why, oh why, will Filezilla not connect??
On FZ I have tried the internal and external IP with various ports. Filezilla is throwing the ECONNREFUSED error, and everything I've read about that does not fix the problem.
Any ideas?

And the server truly offers support for the FTP or SFTP protocol? FileZilla cannot deal with HTTP, rsync or other protocols.

I guess it does do FTP, but I was not able to figure out how to transfer files from my pc to the server.
I tried the links in your signature. The first link, to read Network Configuration is a bit beyond me, that is I can understand what it is talking about but I have no knowledge about implementing those ideas. The second link to test my connection gave me logos for Dualstack and IPv4, but not for IPv6.

OK, quick check in the PlexServer manual reveals it does not speak FTP at all.

The vsftpd you set up does not seem to run correctly or it is blocked. The other clients you mentioned are native to Linux, and in Linux, the preferred protocol is usually SFTP, not FTP. FileZilla can connect to SFTP if you use the correct port (22), but it cannot connect to full blown SSH2 servers, and it cannot access any shell.
