With me, it's obviously not the local share that's the problem, it's something on the FTP end of things. The local share is a gigbit ethernetused by 8 computers, all of which access the files with lightening speed. We access the files within all other applications just fine - including FZ. However, the FTP server connection is what's choking - and simply reconnecting resolves it.
Whatever it is, is something that's different with that portion of the program than the previous version.

In my case I can rule out the server also. At work it is a NAS enclosure connected at gigabit speeds that works great for all other applications (including FileZilla 2.x). At home I share a drive off of my desktop PC (running XP) and, again, every other application that uses this share can browse, transfer between, etc. this share without any issues. It's just FileZilla 3.x that seems to have some trouble browsing on the network shares in either setup.
Once the transfers actually begin, they move along nicely.
Is anyone else out there having issues browsing mapped network shares with FileZilla 3.x when everything else, including 2.x works nice and quickly?

Thanks botg. I'll be trying that out as soon as it is posted.
I'll let you know how that works out!

Fantastic! I tried the 2008-02-22 nightly build and tested it (via VPN) on my work network. Performance is MUCH better. The same folder that was taking 10-15 seconds to display the contents is now displaying everything comparable to 2.x and Explorer speeds. THANK YOU!
I'll give it a good run through at the office tomorrow, but early indications are great.
Thanks again - very much appreciated.

I dont think this is my antivirus. At work there is also a small pause before GUI becomes available. But it's smaller than at home (few seconds). Nightly build doesnt change anything. And i dont have any open shares or ftps on startup. It freezes on first startup after clean install.

Ok. This must be my antivirus after all (or maybe this was fixed in the very last version of FileZilla). I have upgraded my AVG Free to 8.0 version and there is no freeze before starting FileZilla.
Have switched to AVG 7.5 back, and FileZilla startup freezes are back too. So it's definitely antivirus issue.
