How can I get rid of these prompts ?

#1 Post by Pachat » 2008-03-08 12:14

Using 3.0.7.1 (in conjunction with Notepad++ as editor) I'd like not to have these prompts each time I modify a file on the server

"A file with that name is already being edited"
(I know that : I have just edited it and want to re-edit it)
Although I set "Replace" on the left side in Configuration I have this prompt every time.

"A file previously opened has been changed"
(I know that : I have just re-edited it and want to put it on the server)
Although I set "Replace" on the right side in Configuration I have this prompt every time.

As I modifiy tens times an hour, this is just annoying.

The rest is perfect, thanks for the good work !

Can't get rid of them, would open up a possibility for data loss.

I understand.
But i found this like Vista's UAC : could open a door for Viruses.
Why do most of the people disable Vista's UAC : because they don't want to answer to three questions every time they use a soft.
It was such a mistake that Vista's SP1 will low this.

I work intensively directly on the server. And have, of course, always a backup when doing so.
While I work, I know what I'm doing, and don't want to have to answer repeatedly to unnecessary questions.

I think that for power users you should have a way, even after signing whatever advice you think necessary to post, that it is under they own responsibility that they disable the prompts.

If this is not possible, it will make me look for another FTP or go back to a previous version (just as I've bought a new machine just to go back to XP after one year of Vista).

I'd like you to consider users as responsible (well, as a software writer myself, I know that it is sometimes a little too optimistic ).
But never the way, disable the prompts would be a relief.

For instance, you may put an unchecked box "Ask this question again ?".
When checked, a prompt telling how dangerous it is would ask another confirmation.
That way, it would appear, but only once per run.

You mean, 'Don't ask this question again', do you?

I would like to second this request. I really like the simplicity of the Filezilla client, but that prompt is really annoying. I know when I've finished editing a file, and I know when I want it saved. The option should be there to turn that prompt off.

Thanks

I know it is annoying, but it's not possible to get rid of it without allowing potential data loss.

To be franc this kind of delusive protection is what I call the "Vista syndrom"

In fact, no one can protect a user to delete data inadvertedly : this is human.

What we want is to adapt the tool at the level of confidence we have in it.
Which, speaking of FileZilla, is great.

Vista syndrome, huh? I don't disable UAC because of the prompts, UAC breaks far more than you may see on first sight.
Filezilla, on the other hand, just likes to play safe. Better safe than sorry, don't you think? Of course a real DAU (Dumbest Assumed User) will still manage to lose his data anyway.

In short: It's the usual game of safety vs. convenience.

Ok. Do you mean that there are also technical reasons in Filezilla for having a prompt to stop the program flow before uploading ?

Yes, to prevent data loss. Like I said multiple times.

Wow. I agree that this nag screen has got to go. I'll download the source and disable the prompt to see if "data loss" actually occurs. Not sure how data loss if being defined here but it's hard to believe that it would cause any as every FTP client on the planet (including previous FileZilla versions) seems to work find without such a prompt.

That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

This is like Firefox saying you can't turn off that "You're posting content on the Internet!" dialog every time you fill out and submit a form. "For your protection" isn't a feature it's a hassle. And it's because of the lack of control over these prompts -- on an otherwise excellent app -- that I'm dumping FileZilla today.

Ok then, since you know it better, tell me, how do I detect when a program has finished writing to a file so that I can upload it in a safe and reliable way that works for all platforms? Nah? I'm still waiting for your answer.
