Connection Timeout In Configuration Wizard During Setup

#1 Post by hapkidoin » 2008-06-30 17:50

Hello everyone. Newbie alert...

I downloaded FZ client this morning and have been trying to get it to work for a few hours now. I put everything the way I think it's supposed to be and I have run the "Firewall and router configuration wizard" quite a number of times. Everything looks great until it gets to the bottom. Here is the text of the test results:

Connecting to probe.filezilla-project.org
Response: 220 FZ router and firewall tester ready
USER FileZilla
Response: 331 Give any password.
PASS 3.0.11
Response: 230 logged on.
Checking for correct external IP address
IP xx.xx.xx.xx xx-xx-xx-xx
Response: 200 OK
PREP 6025
Response: 200 Using port 6025, data token 962216777
PORT xx,xx,xx,xx,23,137
Connection timed out.
Connection closed

I went in and changed the timeout setting that I could find (changed it to 240 seconds) but that did not appear to have any effect on the amount of time it took to timeout. I got on the forums and searched around for over an hour, reading different things and I didn't ever find anything to answer the question of what the heck is going on here. (If it's there, I apologize for wasting your time, but I canNOT find it. :? )

I've looked at all my router and firewall settings and tried different combinations of different things and nothing seems to work. I either get just "Connection closed" or the message above.

Help!

Thanks.

Unfortunately that log is useless with totally obfuscated IPs.

The test is an Active mode (PORT) test. It means the FTP server tries to connect back to you. Specify a range of ports in Active mode settings of Filezilla and port-forward the very same range in your router.

Sorry, just being paranoid, I guess.

Here's a fresh one from this morning.

Connecting to probe.filezilla-project.org
Response: 220 FZ router and firewall tester ready
USER FileZilla
Response: 331 Give any password.
PASS 3.0.11
Response: 230 logged on.
Checking for correct external IP address
IP 69.66.68.60 gj-gg-gi-ga
Response: 200 OK
PREP 6080
Response: 200 Using port 6080, data token 1456511357
PORT 69,66,68,60,23,192
Connection timed out.
Connection closed

On my router/firewall, I've got single port forwarding for ports 20 and 21 set to forward to the appropriate internal IP and port range forwarding set to forward ports 6000 through 6100 to the appropriate internal IP.

In the network configuration screen, I have the following settings:
Page 2: Default transfer mode = active; Allow fallback to other transfer mode on failure is checked
Page 3: Fall back to active mode
Page 4: Use the following IP address: 69.66.68.60 (This IS a static IP); Don't use external IP address on local connections is checked
Page 5: Use the following port range: 6000-6100

Then there must be a firewall somewhere blocking the connection. Please read the Network Configuration Guide, it's linked below.

The network configuration guide says to run the network configuration wizard if you are running 3.

I have this same issue so here is all I know to tell you:
--Windows XP Pro SP-0 updated to 3 (bare bones install, windows w/ updates, windows live messenger and filezilla only)
--Windows XP MCE SP-2 updated to 3 (avira antivi, spybot, & some other reg tools)
*both machines are custom builds with fully functional drivers, windows services unmolested, plenty of ram & space..etc---no connection/file transfer issues with windows live or through LAN direct access
-LAN settings: obtain IP and DNS auto; DHCP enabled; append primary & connection specific DNS with append suboption; enable LMHOSTS lookup; default netbios; TCP/IP filter is disabled (haven't had any issues with these settings and the gateway listed below in 2yrs--ie, been able to work out any connection issue so far with the combo.

FileZilla 3.0.11.1 installed on both
FileZilla Server 0.9.26beta installed on mce machine

*windows firewall is off & filezilla has been added to the exceptions list--no other firewalls

I am on a Linksys Gateway WCG-200 cable-modem/rounter
-port 24 and ports 5550-5600 with both protocols are forwarded to the mce machine
-firewall protection, filter proxy/popup windows/multicast/fragmented ip packets/port scan alert/block anonymous internet requests enabled
-filter cookies/java/activex disabled
*in process of triple checking the block anonymous internet requests option

**Charter ISP 10Mbps down 1Mbps up with dynamic IP

I have set all settings on both server & client as bland as I possible can figure out, that being said, I have no problems transferring files from the mce server to the xp pro client @ 15+Mbps....but the client fails the firewall and router configuration wizard on both machines.

FileZilla client settings:
-FTP transfer mode is active without the fall back option
-active mode is limited to local ports 5550-5600/get external IP from http://ip.filezilla-project.org/ip.php .. and the option for don't use external IP on local is enabled
-passive mode is set to fall back to active mode
-FTP proxy is set to none
-I have not yet added any keyfiles
-no limits and a 20 second timeout for transfers (default settings)
*-I have added the show debug menu with verbose options and raw directory listing but have no clue how to operate either option that I see available under the debug menu.

Here are the results of the wizard on the mce machine:
Connecting to probe.filezilla-project.org
Response: 220 FZ router and firewall tester ready
USER FileZilla
Response: 331 Give any password.
PASS 3.0.11.1
Response: 230 logged on.
Checking for correct external IP address
Retrieving external IP address from http://ip.filezilla-project.org/ip.php
Checking for correct external IP address
IP 24.171.12.238 ce-bhb-bc-cdi

Response: 200 Using port 5590, data token 1600371581
PORT 24,171,12,238,21,214
Connection timed out.
Connection closed
*i do not know why ce-bhb-bc-cdi was appended to my ip address, according to grc shield's up my ip is appended with dhcp.charterbologna.com--i believe this to be the NAT Linksys
**normally i wouldn't have posted my ip address however i found that the ports listed just before the time out actually matches the digits in the ip....the same goes for hapkidoin's post!!! i thought this was odd to say the least.

Here are the results of the xp pro machine's run:
Connecting to probe.filezilla-project.org
Response: 220 FZ router and firewall tester ready
USER FileZilla
Response: 331 Give any password.
PASS 3.0.11.1
Response: 230 logged on.

Checking for correct external IP address
IP 24.171.12.238 ce-bhb-bc-cdi
Response: 200 OK
PREP 5550
Response: 200 Using port 5550, data token 115808594
PORT 24,171,12,238,21,174
Connection timed out.
Connection closed

i don't see much difference in either of the 3. I could not find a logfile for the client. Wasted 2 hrs looking for it between the forums, wiki, and some other page; but for those of you who must have a log post, here is the last portion of my log from the server:

Don't use port 24, it's not reserved for FTP. Either use 21 or anything above 1024.

no changes when changed to port 21 or 1050

no changes when the NAT router security controls are disabled, including the block anon requests and firewall.

changed the range too with the new ports, no problems transferring to client pc, but still both clients fail the wizard.

after making the changes i did receive this firewall denial service log:

TCP- or UDP-based Port Scan DETECTED on TUE JUL 22 15:24:26 2008 targeting 24.171.12.238,59062, sent from 24.217.0.5,53

in the past i believed this type of report was generated when pinged by my isp, don't know if it helps.

Wizard is testing Active mode, so you have incoming connections. These are blocked somehow.

Have you read (and understood) the Network Configuration Guide yet? It is linked below my port for everybody to read.

edit: Firewall seems to mis-judge the incoming connections as port scan and discarding the packets.

i have gone through the configuration guide several times, understanding it....well...most of it

will go through it again

the guide gives a description of possible problem of the nat router making changes to the ip, but not a single suggestion, fix or work-around

As long as your firewall is discarding the packets as port scan, nothing will change.

i'm on with linksys working it now.....for those of you viewing changing to dmz hosting makes no changes in the functioning of filezilla

i'll put more info in as a run across it

been through hell with linksys changing settings to handle static ip vs dynamic ip on the router and in the tcp/ip settings and they claim its a firmware issue of which may not be in the current firmware update. if they don't call me tomorrow or early thursday i'll be moving on to openvpn and trying that.

seems like the only bloody thing i can't do is connect to my friend in vancouver or pass the wizard, seems to be fine on the local area network.

sure would appreciate some suggestions other than read the wiki

here is a link to the linksys forum i posted in, there you will find a link to my personal site with all the chat logs from linksys support

okies, here's a tidbit....have been able to get the server to work both through the lan and off-campus. all settings for the router and tcp/ip are where they were before i started making changes with the exception of forwarding port 21 and a range to the pc with the server software on it.

cannot get the client software on the server machine to connect to an off campus filezilla server that i've been working with through msn live IM

the client software on the other lan pc connects just fine to the server on the lan, but not off campus. both client software programs fail the wizard, but now for different reasons.

here is the server pc client software message log:

23:58:21 Error: Could not connect to server
23:58:21 Status: Waiting to retry...

here it is from the client software message list from the other lan pc:

notice how i go from connected to the lan server to can't connect to the off campus server...

hope this helps somebody

here's a quick update: i have no issues connecting the filezilla server, i can connect from inside my LAN and from off campus; furthermore, i can find no issues whatsoever with the server software and the connection settings as they are.

neither computer inside the LAN can connect the client software to an off-campus server...trying to verify if the issue is with the originating or destination router or with the destination server settings or originating client settings.

this is what my message box says when trying to connect the client software to an off campus filezilla server:
01:41:25 Error: Could not connect to server
01:41:25 Status: Waiting to retry...
01:41:30 Trace: ControlSocket.cpp(1056): CRealControlSocket::ContinueConnect(0p23f830) m_pEngine=0p15cee10 caller=0p1657078
01:41:30 Status: Connecting to 70.28.220.62:21...
01:41:51 Trace: CRealControlSocket:nClose()
01:41:51 Trace: CFtpControlSocket::ResetOperation(66)
01:41:51 Trace: CControlSocket::ResetOperation(66)
01:41:51 Error: Could not connect to server

there is a diffeerent number set inside the parenthesis after the last two entries before the "error: could not connect to server"

i am forwarding port 21 and a range to the pc with the server software, all other router and tcp/ip settings are auto/default i believe....

everything works but the client software reaching outside the lan

**o and both clients still fail the wizard

Maybe campus is blocking FTP. May be against their policies.
