Cannot Connect to Server

#1 Post by gaildean » 2008-03-31 00:26

I recently downloaded and installed filezilla 3.0.8.1 and installed. I have windows xp and I have no firewall, etc running. I went to site manager and filled out the info according to directions I received from the person setting up our website. When I try to connect this is the message I recieve:
Error: Connection timed out
Error: Could not connect to server

I've checked and rechecked my user name and password. Thanks so much for any help you can give this novice of novices!

You are still blocked by something. The user authentication is later, it can't even connect properly. Must still be some firewall elsewhere.

Thanks for such a speedy reply! How do I find out about what is blocking me or where the firewall is? Thanks!

First, look for the built-in Windows Firewall. It could be still active.
Second, many routers have firewalls, too.

I did a search and found the windows firewall has been stopped. However, there is also a Norton firewall which is listed as running. My next move is to disable(?) it? As I said, I'm a true newbie. I don't know what a router is. I also just found a windows firewall / internet connection sharing (ICS) running. Thanks for your patience!

Norton blocks. If you don't use ICS/Windows Firewall the service can be stopped. But you first priority is configuring exceptions for Filezilla in Norton, or get rid of it.

I discovered my problem is a Firewall. <Insert groan>

I D/Ld a popular ftp to help establish guilt. I have reconfigured the Program Manager to allow both ftp's.
Connection still timed out on both.
Reboot. Rechecked that the settings, in the Firewall ProgMan, had held. Windows Firewall is 'OFF'.

I know now the problem isn't with software but my lack of knowledge with Firewalls.
The last time I bothered with the net, beyond research, in over a decade. You could still backup regular and do a Format C: to handle the worst virus I 'might' get -ya know? Never got anything Stop Sign couldn't handle.

Anyway, I know you're not responsible for educating me. I can't even guarantee our little 'not yet a startup' company will utilize your software beyond my Shareware version. Still, if you happen to know where I am losing myself, I'd appreciate it a point in the right direction.
I'll be at it for awhile and if the situation changes I'll update.
thanks.
