Re: Network error: Software caused connection abort
The software in question is Windows, probably. Something has caused Windows to give up waiting for a response from the remote server and it believes the network is to blame. Try turning on keep-alives. If you're running wirelessly, try and see if the same problem appears if you're wired.
You sure that this is for FileZilla? That's a strange error message. Are you using FileZilla 2 or 3?

Re: Network error: Software caused connection abort
It's a generic network error. Your PC is losing connectivity to the remote server. The number of causes is in the hundreds.
Try a different FTP client to see if the problem persists.

Re: Network error: Software caused connection abort
I know it's years since this thread was used, hope you don't mind me picking up on it again but I have a closely related issue.
First of all in answer to the original question: Most (S)FTP servers will disconnect you if you're idle for a preset amount of time (usually between 2 and 5 minutes in my experience). Keep-alives don't tend to help, as "idle" in this case means "not transferring data". So the commands used by FileZilla's keep-alive feature such as PWD and LIST have no effect.
The disconnect is not really an error, and subsequent file transfers will work as normal, they'll just re-establish the connection and hey presto.
My problem is that, while file transfers automatically re-establish the connection, the CD command doesn't. So if I'm browsing the remote server, then I stop to make a cup of tea / read an email / whatever, by the time I go back to continue browsing the connection has been dropped and the navigation fails.
It's not a big deal, I simply try again and FileZilla realises it needs to reconnect, and I'm back on. But after a few years of this it has become very tiresome. Note: this only happens on my XP machine, not on my Vista machine. So please can you fix it for XP?
I'm not the only one either: in the course of my Googling I found this: http://trac.filezilla-project.org/ticket/4300 which is exactly the problem I'm trying to describe.

Re: Network error: Software caused connection abort
Found this using search
Same problem but it just suddenly started shortly after upgrading to Filezilla 3.5.3
It happens on larger files... the small ones upload no problem. I set it to resume and it will eventually get through but large files over say 5 megs take forever.
Up until now I never had any issues with Filezilla and my server tells me they see no problem at their end. This suddendly started a few months ago and I have made no changes to my system that can explain this. I have reloaded a clean copy but till have the errors
The errors I get are:
Error: Network error: Software caused connection abort
Error: File transfer failed
and
Error: Server sent disconnect message
Error: type 11 (by application):
Error: "Application error"
Error: File transfer failed
Any help would be appreciated thanks

Re: Network error: Software caused connection abort
Most likely some firewall or NAT router is interfering with the connection.

Re: Network error: Software caused connection abort
Whilst it isn't causing me a problem, I am getting the 'Fatal Error' as shown in the image below. I have been using the software for a couple of years using 'ftp'.
Today I changed to 'sftp' and it's not a problem transferring files either way.
However, after about five minutes since the last action, the red error message appears. It is no problem re-connecting but is there any specific reason why this error appears as it never did when I was using 'ftp'?
This is the version of the software:

Re: Network error: Software caused connection abort
Looks like the SFTP server software simply kicks your client after 5 minutes of inactivity.
FTP and SFTP are different services and can thus be configured differently.
