Providing more information would be a good thing to start with.

that is the error message whenever i attempt to "view/edit" a file (html), then it opens notepad with an "Untitled" doc.
could this simply be a matter of changing my default editor properties?
i am pretty sure my customs are syntactically correct...here, look.
and it is ONLY happening with html documents.

html "C:\windows\notepad.exe" -open
jpg "C:\Program Files\Paint Shop Pro 7\psp.exe" -open
gif "C:\Program Files\Paint Shop Pro 7\psp.exe" -open
png "C:\Program Files\Paint Shop Pro 7\psp.exe" -open

sorry! I don't know why i left that one so vague.
i really appreciate your help, btw.

Why exactly do you add "-open"? Just because the example program makes use of that program specific argument, does not mean your programs all understand "-open" too.

well, i was pretty sure from past programming experience that notepad does. actually, yeah. any program that can open will understand that command. its been a while, so i don't remember all the arguments that can go with a particular program.
but are you hinting at a solution :?: cause i would surely like one.
i will try to remove the "open" from the html line...

-----------

well, your suggestion worked, but i don't know why.
i HAVE BEEN using the old way and it was working...but your solution worked, so thanks.

great support here! God bless you all.
