CHMOD Won't Change on Root Folder (Always 0) So, getting 403

#1 Post by M3rC » 2008-12-29 19:15

hey guys,
this morning I woke up to a nightmare!
tried visitng my site (www.teenproblogger.net) but got a 403 error, so I searched it up on the net and people suggested it was the CHMOD permissions that were stuffed up.

I check through my FTP and it was true my wordpress folder had a CHMOD of "0" (so everything unticked) but I can't change it either!

Keep getting a an error;

Status: Retrieving directory listing...
Command: CWD /public_html/teenproblogger
Response: 550 Can't change directory to /public_html/teenproblogger: Permission denied
Error: Failed to retrieve directory listing

I'm using the latest version of FileZilla too,
Please help :( as I'm unable to access any part of my siteee!

You need to contact the server administrator, looks like this is one of the cases in which root assistance is needed.

I've just sent him a message, awaiting his reply.

Thanks for the quick reply botg.

I'm just worried if I've been hacked/lost files? Is there a possibility of that has happened :( :( :(

Everything's possible, I would not rule it out.

Thank you botg,
I've posted this issue on about five forums and you're the only one that's provided any support!
Really appreciate it, my webhost said hes looking into it as we speak :)

Shall keep you posted with the latest developments.

Root folder is supposed to be owned by root and set to CHMOD 755. It's supposed to be owned by root to prevent you from accidentally deleting it. I'm guessing they forgot that bit.

Actual root or virtual root? What you see as root over FTP is often not the actual root on the server.

Well, since one root makes complete sense, and the other root is generally wrong, which do you think I meant? ;)
