Maybe I'm missing something , but I feel like the code is massively undercommented and it makes me wish there were some kind of guide to the overall design philosophy.
Also, where would I go to think about creating button and/or key combinations to create effects within the program?

There is no explicit design philosophy. The implicit design philosophy is, in short: Software for power users that know what they are doing and expect reliable functionality over eye candy.it makes me wish there were some kind of guide to the overall design philosophy.
